Description: This book describes infectious disease considerations specific to patients encountered in the medical or surgical subspecialty critical care unit.
Purpose: Offered is a reference to help guide the care of infected patients encountered by the intensivist who does not have specific infectious disease training.
Audience: Senior trainees and practitioners are an appropriate audience for this work. Authors and editors represent an international group with acknowledged expertise in the management of critical care unit infections.
Features: The book's 55 chapters are organized into eight sections. After a discussion of general considerations, specific approaches in the use of antiinfectious agents are provided. Subsequent sections describe problems of various types including infectious emergencies, respiratory, digestive, urinary tract,and specific surgical infections. For the most part, chapters are clearly written and references are provided in abundance with citations dating to within two years of publication. No photographs are used and black-and-white drawings are of inconsistent quality. Tables, though relatively infrequent, are effectively used. The table of contents divides sections into specific chapters and authorship while the concluding subject index is organized to allow separate access to figures and tables.
Assessment: This can be recommended for a multinational perspective and contemporary discussion of the infectious complications and issues seen in the critical care unit. At times, inconsistent production quality detracts from effective presentation. This concern may be addressed in subsequent editions.
