Editorial Reviews

Richard J. Glassock
This is a large, multiauthored, comprehensive treatise on the subject of critical care medicine in nephrology. The editors have attempted to review the topic in order to facilitate and enhance interest in research in the field and to improve the quality of patient care. As such, they address two overlapping audiences: basic and applied researchers and critical care and nephrology practitioners. The chapters are a series of essays on a wide range of topics from very fundamental physics to clinical or epidemiological analyses. With such a broad territory, the organization of the chapters presents additional difficulties. Some degree of overlap is inevitable. Nevertheless, the book is unique in that no other publication has dealt with the topic in such a detailed and comprehensive manner. The book contains a wealth of information, and considering its size and scope, it is remarkably current (references up to 1996). It will serve well as a reference text for academicians in the field and as a source for clinical guidance for practitioners in the field.
