Description: This is a multiauthored comprehensive overview of critical care management of neurologic problems.
Purpose: A guide to management of the critically ill neurologic and neurosurgical patient is provided, with an emphasis on not only the central nervous system but also on secondary effects in other organ systems.
Audience: Neurologists, neurosurgeons, and intensivists are an appropriate audience for this work. Content is at the level of fellows and staff members. Contributors come from North America with the largest concentration affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Features: After review of monitoring and common presentations for neurologic conditions, there is discussion of common neurologic problems seen in the intensive care unit including subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord diseases, status epilepticus, central nervous system infections, and special considerations in perioperative care. Chapters are clearly written and include line drawings and tables. Computed tomographic scans are also used on occasion, which reproduce with adequate though not outstanding quality. Each chapter contains a reference list dating to within two to three years of publication including both primary and secondary data sources. The table of contents simply lists chapter titles and authorship. Concluding the book is an outstanding group of appendixes reviewing monitoring calculations and standard assessment scores. A sample nursing flow sheet is included. Finally, a detailed subject index is provided.
Assessment: This is the second important work to appear in a short time serving an important and underserved discipline. Containing an effective combination of pathophysiology review and clinical practice strategies, this valuable contribution belongs on the neuro ICU reference shelf along with Neurological and Neurosurgical Intensive Care, 4th edition, edited by Ropper et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2004).
