Overview

This comprehensive reference takes the Incredibly Easy approach to one of the most demanding and complex areas of nursing. Covering all aspects of critical care and updated to reflect current evidence-based nursing practice, this new edition offers coverage of moderate sedation and perianesthesia management, updated ACLS and code management, information on rapid response teams, and a new “Handle With Care” icon to identify concerns and actions relating to elderly, pediatric and bariatric patients. It also includes a quick reference comparing the types of shock, as well as access to online case studies to improve critical thinking skills, an NCLEX tutorial, test-taking strategies, and over 1,000 NCLEX-style questions.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Cynthia Lee Cummings, RN, MSN, EdD (University of North Florida Brooks College of Health)
Description: Using a unique presentation with illustrations, memory joggers, and color art, this book provides critical care concepts for nurses new to intensive care.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide information to nurses interested in critical care and to help them understand this basic skill set. The book meets the objectives in a very thorough way.
Audience: Nurses or nursing students interested in critical care are the intended audience.
Features: The book covers all areas of patient care related to critical care. It begins with the basics of critical and holistic care and is then divided into body systems. It also includes appendixes on emergency care, moderate sedation, and overdose. The best features of the book are the illustrations and memory joggers. I also was surprised at the excellent level of detail. The book covers every area of critical care nursing and does so in a very current and thorough manner. The highlighted areas are very helpful for students. Including a few case studies may be a good idea, but the book is, overall, well done without them.
Assessment: I was impressed with the quality and depth of content. The illustrations and information are spot-on and the equipment and treatments described are the most current. The highlighted tips are excellent and the concluding material on moderate sedation and overdose is important. There are other critical care books aimed at nurses, such as Monitoring the Critically Ill Patient, 3rd edition, Jevon and Ewens (Wiley-Blackwell, 2012), but this one provides current, thorough information in a context that should be well received by students. The third edition is necessary as these concepts change dramatically.
