    Great patterns, great presentation

If I had to choose just one book on crochet for beginners as well as for those with experience, this would be it. The styles make excellent use of crochet's strengths; these are not just "too bad you're not knitting" designs. They won't go out of date. The book's production and presentation are outstanding. The page layout is clearly designed for the user: the project details are copiously photographed with no hairdos or odd poses hiding the neckline and no too-dark colors camouflaging the stitch-work! Even an extremely easy piece, such as the "chain lace big fat scarf," is sophisticated, looks complex, and is highly rewarding.

A contemporary crochet book that rivals the knitting books

Finally, a book of crochet projects that don't look like your grandma's granny square and zig-zag afghans. (Not that I don't treasure those afghans!) This book is a fantastic resource for up-to-date, colorful crochet projects that use the great new yarns that are out on the market. I made the double bobble scarf and liked it so much, as did my 25-year-old daughter, that I made one for her for Christmas.
