KLIATT - KLIATT Review
Crochet has been undergoing a renaissance in the last several years. Several fashion designers have created beautiful and unique crochet jewelry and enthusiasts are now exploring how to make crochet jewelry. The book is divided into six basic chapters: materials, tools and techniques, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pins and rings. There is information about various types of yarn, thread and wire, beads and sequins, getting started (how to crochet), basic stitches, working in rounds, beaded crochet, shaping and other techniques. Each of the core techniques is demonstrated in step-by-step photographs. Some of the projects are Amulet Purse, Gemstone Lariat, Chunky Flower Bracelet, Beaded Chain Bracelet, Hoop Earrings, Flutterby Pin, and Hemp Disc Pins. This collaborative work is based on the work of several international designers. Kim and Pulvermachker are the owners of Loopy Mango, a New York boutique specializing in handmade clothes and jewelry. Age Range: Ages 12 to adult. REVIEWER: Shirley Reis (Vol. 42, No. 1)
VOYA
The authors compile forty crochet jewelry projects created by a group of international designers that encourage crafters to experiment with the crochet jewelry trend. The book is beautifully laid out and full of color photographs that illustrate the projects, materials, and techniques. In addition to the designs, Kim and Pulvermakher include detailed instructions on basic stitches and techniques as well as descriptions of the various materials and tools required for undertaking the projects. The easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, illustrated with photographs and artwork, are perfect for a beginner who is just learning to crochet and are a great reminder for teens with crochet experience. The in-depth descriptions of the various tools and materials are overdone, and it is likely that even the most novice crocheters will skim or skip altogether. Project categories include necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pins, rings, and chokers, offering easy, intermediate, and advanced difficulties for each. Pieces use a variety of material from yarn to wire and often include beads or sequins. Each project has a short description, and multiple color photos accompany the directions. Thumbnail photos included with the table of contents provide readers with a visual image of what the project looks like instead of only a project name. Beginners and those who know how to crochet will flock to this book with its fun, funky, and colorful projects. Reviewer: Alissa Lauzon
