Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Wheatley
A new addition in the "For Fun!" series, Bullard's book follows the format of outlining the basics of crochet in the first section, including a description of yarns and the different hooks used in crocheting. The next section shows techniques for holding the crochet hook, adding different colored yarns, gauging stitches, and finishing a project. Four projects are presented, the simpler dishcloth and afghan square, and the more difficult purse and striped scarf. The third section provides bits of crocheting trivia, a crocheting timeline, and information about crocheting in fashion and for a cause. Each book in the series includes a table of contents, glossary, and additional resources. Vivid photographs accompany every section, but are not sufficient for the four projects. While a photograph of the finished project is helpful, diagrams or photos for each step would take this book from being adequate to exceptional. Drawings illustrate the steps in making a slip knot, and the single crochet stitch directions have a few photos illustrating the steps. With this shortage of instructional diagrams, this book would better serve intermediate crocheters instead of beginners, or as snapshot look at the world of crocheting. Reviewer: Barbara Wheatley
