Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Righetti's 1988 classic remains one of the most comprehensive and accessible guides to crochet available. This isn't a quick-start guide: Righetti provides an overview of the necessary supplies, a brief history of crochet, and information about gauge before guiding beginners through their first stitch, an ideal approach for readers who wish to understand crochet in-depth. Projects reinforce the lessons, and Righetti's friendly style reassures those new to the craft.

    Crocheting in Plain English

Maggie Righetti did it again! This book and her book on Knitting in Plain English are essential for stitchers, particularly helpful when learning on one's own.

Her diagrams are very clear and helpful.

    Beginners Best Friend

I'm in the navy and decided to learn to crochet during a 9 month deployment. I bought this book, a hook and a skein of yarn. I learned every single stitch in this book with no problem. The directions are very easy to follow. The girls in berthing were blown away by what this book taught me.

Don't make this book your ONLY teacher!

While there are many useful tips and the basic stitches are explained well, this author presents *her* way as *the only way* in more than one instance. Since she does present alternatives in other parts of the book, readers could easily jump to the conclusion, where only one way is presented, that this one way must be the 'correct' way. Two very basic examples: The author states (1) stitches are worked in the top two loops of the starting chain (2) the hook must be held somewhat like a pencil, with the index finger curled far back on the handle. If you use this book, make sure you read other books also, so you'll know, for instance, that the first row can be worked in the back loop of the starting chain, and the hook can be held overhand (like a steak knife) if that's what you find comfortable. Glad I wasn't in her class! I would never have continued, let alone enjoyed, crocheting.

    A Good Beginner's Book

I learned to crochet from this book, and feel that it gave me a very good foundation. The directions are very clear, and there are plenty of diagrams. After working my way through the instructions I was able to crochet several items from outside sources with no trouble, including items made with crochet thread. The author has included several patterns, which I did not find to be worth spending my time on. There is also a section on various fancy stitches which I did find helpful. At one point Ms. Righetti refers to God as 'she'. This was very offensive to me.
