Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1

A little boy and his father frolic in a pond on a lazy summer day. The child is "captain of the Crocodaddy hunt." He rides the creature, lures it with a sandwich, and splashes and giggles, but he doesn't succeed in taming the wild beast until he tickles its knees. The final spread shows the father restored to his human form, while the boy, "a little chip off the lazy old Croc," pretends to be the crocodile. Walker's vibrant colors and expressive characters bounce along with the percussive rhyming text, lending visual power to what could have been a one-note premise. This celebration of imaginative play holds appeal for children.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

Kirkus Reviews
A little boy and his father indulge in some splashy imaginative play. A rhyming text details the swimming-trunks- and baseball-cap-clad tot's interior monologue as he hunts for, taunts and tames his "Crocodaddy:" "Crocodaddy, Crocodaddy, whatcha gonna do? / Crocodaddy hunter is RIDING on you!" Walker's bright acrylics take all possible menace out of the foolery, dressing his croc in Dad's yellow trunks and bestowing on him just two tiny paint smears for teeth. The good humor in the proceedings is evident in every spread, and it's a game many children will be well familiar with. But Norman's scansion sputters at points, and it doesn't provide quite enough for the illustrations to scaffold on. Even at 32 pages, it's still a spread or two too long to maintain interest. (Picture book. 3-5)

Wonderful Book for Fathers and Sons

Purchased this book for my 3 year old son. He loved the story so much, he wanted to hold onto the book while he slept. Great story about a son who playfully imagines daddy is a crocodile. The interactions between boy and crocodaddy are fun, the words are poetic with rhyme, but simple for young beginning readers. The illustrations are very colorful and happy. Great book for fathers with toddlers, especially anticipating summer play in the water.

    Gorgeous and fun!

This beautiful book is perfect for kids and their dads. What child wouldn't love an imaginary romp in the pool on the back of a 'Crocodaddy?' The text is adorable and the illustrations are stunning.

    Great Father's Day Gift!

This delightful book celebrates the love of father and son, as well as the power of imagination. The author's flawless rhymes, including a catchy, bouncy refrain, make it an especially pleasing read-aloud. Kim Norman's text hints that the game of Crocodaddy vs. "captain of the Crocodaddy hunt" is all in the boy's imagination; David Walker's illustrations complete the fantasy in gorgeous, saturated blues and greens that seem to splash off the page. Our first glimpse of Dad in bright yellow swim trunks is followed by many views of a playful, non-threatening crocodile in the same yellow trunks. This is a perfect Father's Day, summer picture book.

    So sweet

I love the father/child relationship in this book. The rhymes are fun and the illustrations shine. Kids will love it for story time. It will be a summer hit for years to come and it is a Fathers' Day MUST.

    Crocodaddy Lands with a Splash!

What child hasn't pretended his daddy was something big and fun to ride on, like a bear, or a whale, or...a Crocodaddy? Norman invades a child's mind and captures to perfection this timeless game of imagination. Using wonderful rhyme, "Now he turns his head and winks. Slowly, s-l-o-w-ly, Crocodaddy sinks!" and repetition of the word "Crocodaddy," she charms adults and kids alike. The story is enhanced by artwork that is both lively and gentle and that give subtle hints (dad's shadow looks like a crocodile; the crocodile is wearing dad's trunks) about what is going. This is a MUST HAVE book.

    Crocodaddy is ADORABLE!

Crocodaddy is absolutely adorable! My daughter and I giggled again and again. What a sweet and exciting story and what fun! This is the kind of fun that every kid loves to have with Daddy, especially when he's CROCODADDY!

Perfect for Father's Day too! This is the kind of story you'll want to read over and over with your little crocs!

    Enjoy!
