Children's Literature - Triss Robinson
The crocodile is fierce and scary. "The Wild World of Animals" series presents an excellent book about this reptile. Crocodiles can be found on five different continents. There are fourteen species in the crocodile family living in and around rivers, lakes, and wetlands. There is also the large saltwater crocodile of Asia and Australia. The shape of the crocodile's body helps it to propel itself through the water after its prey. Its large teeth and strong jaws are used to quickly kill and eat the prey. After baby crocodiles hatch, the mother helps them to the water, staying with them while teaching them how to survive. However, only one out of one hundred crocodile babies lives to be an adult. Crocodiles for years have been hunted for their meat and skin. Consequently, they have become endangered in some countries. Because of this, many people are working together to help protect the crocodiles' habitat. From ancient times to the present, children as well as adults have been fascinated by this frightening creature. Its size, the manner in which it attacks and kills its prey, and its prehistoric appearance lend itself to great photographs and an interesting text for all ages to read. The text and the pictures on each page match very well, making the information easily understood by any level of reader.
