Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

"I couldn't change myself. This epiphany led me to the realization that I didn't love easily, but when I did, I loved with all of myself and I loved completely." The lynchpin novel of Ally Condie's Matched trilogy finds Cassia in the dangerous Outer Provinces in full pursuit of her beloved Ky. Fortunately, he is at least temporarily safe, but rapidly evolving developments offer her little opportunity for tranquility. With each passing event, threats and potential betrayals seem closer; unless Ally acts, her future will be forever locked closed. Editor's recommendation.

Publishers Weekly
Separated by the dictatorial Society that rules them, Cassia has been searching for Ky while suffering the harsh conditions of labor camps far from home. About to be sent to the Society’s biggest city for her permanent work assignment, Cassia instead grabs an opportunity to reach the war-torn Outer Provinces, where she finally gets a lead in tracking Ky. Ky has survived being used as a pawn in the Society’s war against a nameless and faceless enemy; he and two companions have escaped into a no man’s land, and Cassia follows. As Cassia and Ky hike through dangerous territory in search of a rumored rebellion and the freedom to be together, the specter of Cassia’s betrothed, Xander, hangs over them. Narrated from Cassia and Ky’s viewpoints, Condie’s sequel to her acclaimed Matched is very much a middle book, centering on a transformative journey and setting up the finale to come. Newcomers will need to read the first book for background, but vivid, poetic writing will pull fans through as Condie immerses readers in her characters’ yearnings and hopes. Ages 14–up. (Nov.)
VOYA
Cassia, Ky, and Xander's story continues in this second book of the Matched trilogy. This one tells of Cassia and Ky's struggles to find each other in a frontier outside of the Society. Both of them are joined by other young people eager to escape their otherwise dismal fate. Once the two groups come together, it is a sweet reunion for Cassia and Ky, but the teens discover they have different goals. Cassia and Indie (Cassia's new friend) are eager to search for and join the Rebellion. Ky, however, distrusts the Rebellion almost as much as the Society because of his past. Told in the alternating voices of Cassia and Ky, the story reveals more of Ky's life and the reader comes to know him. Although Xander is not physically present except for a brief appearance early in the book, he is still very much a part of the story. Hints are dropped and a secret finally revealed about him that will surely whet readers' appetites for the concluding story of this trilogy. This is more than just a placeholder between the first and last parts of a trilogy. The use of alternating voices offers some redundancy but is very effective overall. The pacing is good and improves once Cassia and Ky reunite. Condie effectively sets the stage for the final chapter in Cassia's story by leaving the reader hanging at the end of the book. Matched (Dutton, 2010/VOYA December 2010) fans will devour this book and be eager for the concluding one. Reviewer: Deborah Wenk
Children's Literature
Survival and love motivate Cassia Reyes who risks reuniting with Ky Markham in the Carving beyond the Outer Provinces in this second "Matched Trilogy" novel. Chapters shift between first-person accounts by Cassia and Ky, alerting readers to information characters conceal from each other, such as Ky not telling Cassia everything about his parents' deaths. Intrigue and crises intensify due to new alliances the pair form with Indie, who helped Cassia hide contraband from the Society, and Eli, who fled enemy firing raids with Ky. Enduring vicious human and natural obstacles, characters gradually learn some of their companions' secrets, with revelations causing them to realize truths about themselves and wonder if the others are trustworthy or possibly spies for the Society. They find caves filled with books and maps, acquiring information describing rebellious activities. Cassie and Ky realize Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "Crossing the Bar" conveys resistance messages and speculate who has served as the Pilot in the past and if the current leader could be among their group. Ky frustrates Cassia when he disagrees with her about joining the Rising. Vivid imagery depicts the Carving's wild landscape as a non-human character, filled with canyons, steep bluffs, and poisoned rivers, contrasting with the clean, regimented Society and effectively symbolizing desolation and chaos. Characters remain aware of the Society's omnipresent interference even in the wilderness due to tracking devices sewn into their coats and alarms protecting biological specimens. Steady plot development sweeps readers along in this satisfying adventure which convincingly establishes conflicts for the trilogy's final volume. Similar settings and themes are explored in Pete Hautman's Hole in the Sky (2001) and Gloria Skurzynski's Trapped in the Slickrock Canyon (1984). Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer

A sequel to Matched, Crossed has everything a good book needs. One thing this reviewer really likes about it is that Condie changed her way of writing for Crossed by going back and forth between Ky and Cassia. It allows the reader insight as to how they actually both feel through the entire book. The ending is somewhat disappointing, except for the fact that it means there is another book coming. Everyone who loved Matched should read Crossed. 4Q, 4P. Reviewer: Maddie Miles, Teen Reviewer
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Cassia, Ky, and Xander are back in this eagerly awaited sequel to Matched (Dutton, 2010), joined by new friends and facing new obstacles. Ky has been banished to the outer provinces along with many other young Aberrations to serve as cannon fodder for the unseen enemy of the Society. It is a brutish-and certain to be very short-life. But Ky and his friends Vick and Eli escape into The Carving, a vast system of canyons seemingly beyond the reach of the Society. Meanwhile, Cassia escapes a Society work camp and flees into the canyons, risking everything to find Ky and a rumored rebellion called the Rising, once again leaving behind Xander. Ky reluctantly shares bits of his past with her, only hinting at his aversion to the Rising. Xander, though not physically present in the canyons, intrudes on their relationship again and again and is withholding important information. Caught between the Society and the Rising, and wanting only to be together, Ky and Cassia must choose a side if they are to survive. Told in alternating chapters from their points of view, the book gives readers full access to the hearts and minds of two memorable characters. Their needs, love, and internal conflicts are palpable. Their voices are distinct and authentic, and the writing is often poetic. But this volume resolves little, leaving readers hungry for the final book in the trilogy.—Anthony C. Doyle, Livingston High School, CA
Kirkus Reviews
Cassia and Ky grapple with secrets, wilderness and the tumultuous meanings of love in the second installment of this addictive, layered dystopic trilogy. Far away from both each other and the neatly manicured and repressive Society suburbs, Ky and Cassia are both on the run. Cassia slyly gets herself moved from a work camp to the Outer Provinces, where kids are shipped to die as "decoys"--defenseless shooting fodder for the Enemy. She's not positive that Ky's there, but readers are: The two alternate narrating in first-person present. Ky's voice is dry and harsh, Cassia's lusher, befitting their life histories. They're desperate to find each other. She's exhilarated at whispers of an anti-Society rebellion called the Rising; Ky hates the Rising but holds his reasons close, parceling out his story slowly. When Cassia and Ky find each other, deception looms large, as does Cassia's official Match, Xander, geographically distant but sharply relevant. Although two-boys-one-girl triangles run rife in this genre, Condie's is complicated and particularly human, involving real emotional scars. While more loosely woven than Matched (2010), this volume has its own boons, including non-linear travel through a rough canyon and critical interpretations of Tennyson's symbolism, which could change their world. Questions--about Cassia's vulnerability to the Society's pills, about the Enemy's identity and the Rising's true nature--hover for next time. Both rich and easy to digest, this will leave fans hungry for the third book. (Science fiction/romance. 13 & up)

    Great book!

I have been anticipating this book like no other. As soon as I got it, I ripped it open and did not come out.
The book is filled with great writing, lots of plot twists, and characters that I missed and adored!

The plot line in this book is what got me hooked. There are so many new things going on in the society that I was biting my nails off! Many new things were added and characters turn out to be not what I expected. The pacing of the book is not too quick, but pretty fast. Once you start reading, the reader crosses into the world Ms. Condie has written. The way she described the society now and what has happen since then, really opened the readers eyes to a whole new world.

The element of surprise in this book has a whole new definition that Ms. Condie created. I was taken back by some of the characters. To be quite honest, I was in shock. Some of the secrets in this book were beyond juicy. Though if you read the first book and think back on it, you can see how it made sense. I like how Ms. Condie created such a flowing mystery to the book that it keeps the reader detained,... unable to move till the very last page.

The love interest in this book is what was a big shocker to me. Many feelings were revealed, fought for, and explained. I never thought I could love a love triangle, but Ms. Condie made it work for this book. And let me tell you, those boys are not giving up.

Overall, Crossed is an accomplished sequel that I really enjoyed. Sometimes sequel repeat, or are just filler-ins, not this book. Crossed kept you engaged and enchanted by the society. Ms. Condie created such a striking sequel that I am hype up for the next book!

    High Expectations

When I read Matched it kind of reminded me of a mix between The Giver and the Hunger Games but it still had its own identity. Can't wait for this book!!!

    Cant wait!!

Matched was very epic. It reminded me of Lois Lowry's The Giver, they both had a dictatorship like "Society". When I finished Matched , I was heartbroken and then started searching for a sequel. Now that there is for sure going to be one, I am soooo happy. CANT WAIT FOR IT!!!!

    Worth it.

I was surprised at how good Matched was, its not like the Hunger Games (many books involve a dictator like society and love triangle). Its one of those books that don't have you on the edge of your seat throughout the book but once your done its like WHOA! THAT WAS AWESOME! So I do highly recommend the book, i personally am dying for Crossed to become available!

The first book was OMG so AWESOME.... It did seem a little like the giver by Lois Lowry, In the society... Honestly, after the first book's ending, I don't know how this one will be. The covers of the matched series are just awesome! You have to buy them in hard. It's a beautiful cover, especially the first one

    Um.

Who ever said this was not your average werewolves and vampires book was pretty mistaken. This book doesn't even have werewolves or vampires in it. This series is too good to fall back on what's popular at the moment. Sorry, just had to say that.

Anyway, I seriously cannot wait for this, I can't believe it's still a few months away.
