Twenty-five years after the event, assassination books continue to appear. Marrs, a Dallas-area journalist who teaches a college course on the event, has, however, produced a special one. Its nearly 600 pages are jammed with detail on every aspect of the shooting, the investigations, the suspicions that fell on the Mafia, the FBI, the CIA, anti-Castro Cubans--all the usual suspects. For its comprehensiveness alone, this would be the one book for anyone seeking a really thorough examination of the assassination (but it sorely needs an index). Marrs is sensible and straightforward, giving every side of disputed questions, though it is clear that for him, as for most thoughtful people, the Warren Commission's picture of Oswald as a lone assassin doesn't work. The author talked to witnesses never officially interviewed, even offers never-before-seen pictures (though these contain nothing very startling). His conclusion: Kennedy made so many enemies in business, the military, the right wing, the mob, that his death became inevitable. He sees no Washington-based assassination plot, simply a willingness at the highest level (specifically Lyndon Johnson and J. Edgar Hoover) to relax protective vigilance enough to allow the deed to be done. (Dec.)

We have witnessed the publication of myriad works which purport to explain the events surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy, such as Anthony Summers's Conspiracy ( LJ 6/15/80). Although most of these accounts suggest that Kennedy's death was the product of a conspiracy, they offer different interpretations as to who conceived and perpetrated this heinous crime. Dallas journalist Marrs brings together under one cover diverse theories and facts advanced in many of these works. He points to the inconsistencies and unexplained elements embodied in the official versions as to what transpired in Dallas before, during, and after the President's death. He does not, however, provide a novel theory that would answer some of the vexing questions raised in a reconsideration of the assassination. Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy

The Warren commission's conclusions were all wrong. This book sheds a little bit more light into the investigation. If it was me, I would reopen the investigation right now and not wait 33 years until 2038, that's just too long to wait for the truth.

Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy

I already have a jump start on 11/22/2039. If this book does anything, it does an excellent job of revealing the truth. The Warren Commision's conclusions were all wrong. This is because Kennedy's head jerked backward, not forward as the commission incorrectly stated.

A Definitive Sourcebook

I echo the sentiments of others who have favorably reviewed this book and would add that it should be used as a reference source or companion while evaluating other sources. The research is both solid and exhaustive, as are the annotations. This book is devoid of the outlandish, implausible theories found in other sources. Nor is Marrs a Warren Commission apologist -- the other extreme. In true journalistic fashion, this work presents documented facts and eyewitness testimony and allows readers to decide for themselves.

Too Much Taken Too Far

Jim Marrs, like most critics of the Warren Report, asserts that the Commission was selective with its evidence, vague about interpreting testimony, and filled with innuendoes that have little basis in reality. Unfortunately, many books objecting to the Commission's findings employ the same tactics and are therefore guilty of the same offenses. And this book is one of the biggest offenders. Each of the short sections focuses on one of the unsettling and unresloved aspects of the tragedy of 11/22/63 that doesn't fit into the Warren Report's findings, and impulsively indicts someone as being a conspirator. When I first read this book back in the early 90's it had a peculiar effect on me. I would finish a section and say, 'Ah! So it was the Mafia!' Only to finish the next section and say, 'Ah! So it was the Cubans!' The next section had me going, 'Ah! Rogue government agencies working with both elements did it!' And so on... Then one section, out of left field, described the wild moodswings of the New York Stock Exchange on the days immediately before the assassination. And I asked myself, 'Wait a minute. Am I supposed to believe that Charles Schwab was involved, too?' Come on. I read the rest of the book with the same skepticism I'd read the Warren Report years earlier. I tried re-reading CROSSFIRE earlier this year and I put it down almost immediately; that's what prompted me to write this review. I do believe there was a conspiracy of some kind. (Gerald Posner's tantrum, CASE CLOSED, only further convinced me that the case is still, indeed, very much open.) But the plot couldn't have involved every right wing group, every government agency, Dallas cops, Corsicans, KGB, Cubans, and the Vinnie 'Big Nose' Goombatz crime family. Unfortunately, the trail to the truth about the assassination is getting darker, colder and lonelier with each passing year. Long ago it had slipped from current events to history: several other assassinations, conspiracies, and tragedies (like 9/11) only relegated the JFK murder further into the shadows of distant memory and, almost, irrelevance. Stick with Josiah Thompson's SIX SECONDS IN DALLAS, if you can find it, and just about anything by Edward J. Epstein for a glimpse into this impenetrable event. Skip this mess.

This is by far, the most interesting and entertaining, and informative book about the assasination I have ever read. Please check this one out.

A Complete Investigation

If you ever wondered who was involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy I urge you to read this book. A thorough look at all of the evidence, theories, mistakes and inconsistancies involved with the crime of the century. After presenting a theory, the author tests its validity and relevancy, until finally proposing his own articulate theory.
