Children's Literature - Margaret Orto
Everything is going great for Kyle Evans as he begins his junior year of high school. He is selected to play first string senior varsity basketball, and the team is powerful enough to have a chance at the regional championship. His girlfriend Jenna McBride has just returned from living abroad and their relationship is still strong. Life gets more complicated for Kyle, however, when Lukas Connor, a talented student actor and an old friend Kyle doesn't hang out with anymore, asks him to try out for the school production of Oliver! Lukas reminds Kyle how good he was at performing in skits and plays when they were younger. Kyle tells Lukas that he is no longer into "that kind of stuff," but Jenna persuades him to try out. He wins the key role of The Artful Dodger. Suddenly, Kyle finds himself in conflict with his coach, who thinks he's not focused on basketball. He's also struggling with his teammates, who do not understand why a jock would be interested in theater. Then two acts of vandalism occur. The first is directed at the drama club. The second is aimed at Lukas, who has been bullied for years because he's different and effeminate. These acts shock the school and force Kyle to come to terms with the homophobia rampant at Sainsbury High. Kyle's adolescent voice is authentic as he deals with this act of hatred as well as his own uncomfortable feelings about whether or not Lukas is gay. This short, contemporary story offers high-interest subject matter in easy-to-read form. It sensitively offers readers a chance to explore themes of setting priorities and learning tolerance. Part of the "Orca Sports" series. Reviewer: Margaret Orto

I marched toward Stillman, who was at the far free-throw line, standing with the ball on his hip. "What exactly is your problem?" I said, looking directly into his black eyes.

"Just you," Stillman replied, an irritating smirk forming at one corner of his mouth. "I thought you were supposed to be a basketball player, not one of the funny boys of the drama department.
