Overview

  • More than 1/3 million answer words
  • Easiest to use
  • Easiest on the eyes

Here is the work that made all other puzzle dictionaries obsolete. Its unique Instant Finder System saves you time-consuming searches through the long, jumbled paragraphs of words that are so common in other crossword puzzle dictionaries. Suppose your clue is a six-letter word for RAGE: just turn to that entry and your eye immediately picks out the bold number 6. Now you can pick your answer from just five words, ignoring the 32 others that can't fit.

And note how the clear type and uncluttered format help make your search quicker and easier!

With nearly a million copies sold, this has been a favorite with puzzle fans since 1940.

Editor's Preface

Since its first appearance in 1940, the Crossword Puzzle Dictionary, compiled by the late Andrew Swanfeldt, has acquired a widespread and loyal following among crossword puzzle fans. Each successive edition improved and expanded the original. The third edition introduced the Instant Finder System, in which answer words are listed according to the number of letters. In this fifth edition, the editors have responded to many reader requests by providing separate lists for prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms, lists that can be found at the back of the book. To this fifth edition thousands of new words, both clue words and answer words, have been added and the book has been completely reset in larger type for easier reading. This fifth edition more than adequately reflects today's crossword puzzle clues and answers.

We are greatly indebted to Mr. John Willig, who began and completed a substantial amount of the revisions for this fifth edition. Mr. Willig died during his work on the book, and will be remembered with great fondness and deep gratitude. Ms. Ruth Adler took over the task of revising the book with admirable drive and attention to detail. She has our sincere thanks for a superb job.

    BUY THIS DICTIONARY

I think that this is the best crossword dictionary out there. It allows for easy reference right down to the number of letters in a word ... buy the hard cover too ... you will be very happy!!

    Major Attempt Somewhat Misses Mark

Swanfeldt's book needs to be re-issued; it's been 10 years since first published. The book is difficult to hold, hard to "bend" for ease of reading. I found the word definitions limiting. It suffers from the usual "big fat book" syndrome. However, the book includes words that weren't in my older book, so I appreciated that.
Our Redding Barnes and Noble store perhaps didn't have a large assortment of such dictionaries; I chose this one as the best at that time. My previous book was the New York Times Crossword Dictionary, but I thought that copy was sadly out-of-date, which is why I went shopping for a new one.
I was disappointed in the "presentation" of this book. Maybe my problem is that I suffer from "Old Eyes", but we older readers are the ones who are most faithful to crosswords, so perhaps (despite concern over size) that needs to be a consideration.
The major problem: it's shape/size/print size. (I appreciate the difficulty in compiling such a book, so am sorry to write this review.)

    The Book A Puzzle

I purchased this book because it had great reviews, but it does a poor job helping solve crossword puzzles. Although it has been revised and updated, one asks the question, WHY? Compared to "The New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictioary" and the "Million Word Crossword Dictionary" it fails. Even the "Dell Crossword Dictionary" is more helpful.

You don't always get what you pay for.

Do not like this crossword dictionary!

I bought this x-word dictionary to replace my smaller one. It looked great - big! However, I have found that it doesn't have a lot of words/phrases that I look up periodically. I was surprised at how UN-helpful this dictionary was. Don't buy this one! I like the A-Z dictionary myself.
