Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Lady Firebird, Angelo Caldwell, returns to her home planet, Netaia, in this conclusion to the Firebird Trilogy, following Firebird (Bethany House, 1999/VOYA April 2000) and Fusion Fire (2000/VOYA October 2000). Called home to be confirmed as heiress to the royal line for which she was previously condemned to die, Firebird agrees to return to help trap an assassin bent on destroying her husband Brennan and his people. Once on Netaia, Firebird dreams of leading Netaians past the impending danger of civil war and of bringing them enlightenment through knowledge of the Eternal Speaker. Ultimately she realizes that her greatest danger lies not with the renegade assassins that imperil her family or with the entitled aristocracy and despotic regent that threaten to ignite a bloody uprising, but rather with the pride that lies within herself. While recognizing the desire to be known by making a difference, most teen readers will relate more closely to Terza, sister of the assassin. Recently graduated from "pre-adult training,'' Terza is artificially impregnated with Brennan's child, enabling her to serve as the assassins' disposable backup plan for ensnaring Brennan. Her final defection, despite the wounds of mind control inflicted by her father and brother, is testimony to the ultimate triumph of the Speaker's power—and to a young adult's ability to follow her heart. More overtly didactic and readily predictable than the previous Firebird stories, Crown of Fire nonetheless retains Tyers's hallmarks of strong characterization, engrossing action, and universal challenges in spiritual growth. The only heir to the throne of Netaia able to guarantee the planet's stability, Firebird and her husband, Sentinel Brennen Caldwell, return home for her to be sworn in. Meanwhile, Brennen struggles to recover from his torture by the Shuhr on the planet Three Zed. After and assassination attempt of Firebird, a rebel Shuhr brings a terrible secret to the Caldwells that threatens the future of Brennen's family, prophesied to be the vessel of the Master Singer's (God's) return. In this stirring conclusion to the fantastic "Firebird Trilogy" (Firebird, Fusion Fire), Tyers continues her realistic portrayal of Firebird's struggle to come to terms with her developing belief in the Master Singer while providing even more thrills and adventure.
