The live tunes provide Cruel Smile with most of its highlights, particularly a weary but winning rendition of "Almost Blue" and a craftily constructed medley of "Watching the Detectives" and "My Funny Valentine." Costello's willingness to tweak and tinker is in full evidence on cuts like "Spooky Girlfriend," a stripped-down, beatbox-accompanied version of the When I Was Cruel tune culled from a radio broadcast, and topsy-turvy remixes ...

The enhanced CD also includes the video for the song "45," which appeared in simple audio form on When I Was Cruel. Costello fans now have more than ample reason to crack a knowing smile.
