Roland Auguet not only reconstructs in detail the conduct of these spectacles (gladiatorial combats, the sacrifice of prisoners to wild beasts, the chariot races, the combats between man and beast or beast and beast), but also analyzes the feelings of the crowd and the calculations of its rulers. He explains why the games dominated the life of the city. Examining the games in the context of a broader study of Roman customs, this book provides a synthesized view of how Roman civilization was to a large degree based on the games.

This book is a great source if you want to quickly learn more about Roman 'Games', from the different types of gladiator and their weapons and equipment, to how they obtained and used wild animals, to the chariot races so made famous by Ben Hur. The author uses a lot of contemporary accounts from Roman historians such as Sutonious and Tacitus, and provides a ton of details, from the history of the games, how they evolved, and very detailed information about each of the different games themselves. Ex: What games where given in the morning, midday, and afternoon? How were the bodies of killed gladiators handled? What wild animals did they match against each other? What weapons did the 'bestiari' use ( i.e. gladiators that specialized in confronting lions , etc. ) It is a book well worth your money if you want to inmerce yourself in this particular aspect of ancient Rome.
