In Cruise Confidential, Brian David Bruns spills the dirt — or in this case, the dirty water — on those romantic, fun-filled vacations at sea. His hilarious chronicle of the year he spent working for Carnival Cruise Lines takes readers down into the areas where the crew works and lives, leaving readers gasping with laughter as they’re assaulted nonstop with events that range from the absurd to the utterly bizarre. Stewards fighting over food. Cutlery allowances and other nonsensical rules. What the crew calls those onboard (no, it’s not “passengers”). And of course, the sex. An abundance of ready, willing, and able bodies eager for action on a vessel replete with nooks and crannies leads to love in some mighty strange, and seemingly impossible, places. Breezy, entertaining, and informative, Cruise Confidential is essential reading for those planning a cruise or for anyone who just needs a good laugh.

Different type of cruise book than any other I have read. Definitely entertaining.

I love to cruise and the more I do, the more curious I get about the life of those that work on the ships. So when I saw this book, I couldn't wait for it to arrive. And while the book does give you a different view of the life below the passenger decks, I was disappointed that it didnt go into a little more detail. I was looking for something that talked about the hierarchy of the ship, where everyone fell in the grand scheme of things, how much they actually get paid, etc. Having said that, I really did enjoy reading this book as it was very funny in places and it gave me that little dose of ship life I need to get me to my next cruise!!

    Entertaining book for cruisers!

I usually don't finish any book that I start so for me to finish this book was a big accomplishment. I get bored easily and I need a book to hold my attention. This book did that. It gave me an inside look at what the crew from these ships go through to make our experiences memorable and entertaining! They work extremely long, hard hours. A great, entertaining read!

    Fiction or Non-Fiction?

Starts off sizzling, then fades toward boring. You have to wonder how much of this is truth vs. make believe. If you enjoy cruising, this is a good read. Take it with you on a cruise and as you sit on your balcony reading, wonder, just wonder what is going on several decks below. Readers will pay more attention to ship's crew, that's for sure.

At last!  “Cruise Confidential” is a book by an author who happened to work on a cruise ship, not a cruise ship ex-employee who happened to write a book!

I was endlessly entertained throughout Mr Bruns’ voyages of self-discovery and self-deprecation as he followed his sweetheart into the cruise ship industry.  Little did he realize the difficulties of continuing a relationship under the stresses of life on board a ship together, or the strain of separation while on different postings.  The book gives a humorous insight into the life of the crew-members and a behind-the-scenes look at life on board, where the politics, battles and friendships of the corporate world are amplified in the self-contained domain of a ship.  Engrossed in the tale, I am torn between ultimately wanting the writer finding happiness with Bianca, whilst believing that she is clearly not good enough for him and wishing he would find someone else.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and laughed out loud in places.  I already have a couple more of Mr Bruns’ books lined up to read including the next installment, “Ship for Brains.”

Started out great but ran out of steam real fast

The first 50 pages were great the rest bored me to tears. I found it quite difficult to finish the book. I laughed a lot and this probably would be great to take to the beach. I just felt it was too much of the same information repeated over and over. Plus it makes me feel guilty when I go on a cruise going forward to ask my waiter for anything now that I am aware of all the running around they have to do. I prefer not to know what other's job entails especially when I am on vacation. I just want to relax and have a good time, not think how many laps I make someone run around to get me what I have paid for.

Not Compelling, A very light read

As another reviewer noted, despite trying to cheaply capitalize on the title of Anthony Bourdain's book, this is not the same sort of book. Nothing wrong with a little sex & drugs in a story like this, but surely there should be more to 300 pages than that.

    Don't bother-wasted money.

Well, Bruns is certainly no Bourdain. Pretty weak.

    A little too holier-than-thou

I have long suspected that cruise ship employees, esp those from less developed nations, view American tourists as gluttonous and lazy. This book confirmed my fears. That part was 'good.' However, the author comes across a bit preachy in my mind. I read the book as escapism and for titillation - a cheap beach read - and he spends page after page telling us how virtuous he is for NOT cheating on the absentee girlfriend who treats him like dirt anyway. Had I wanted a sermon, I would have packed my bible along with me.

    Fantastic Book a must read

This book is a great book and gives a lot of insight into what the men and woman go through on cruise ships. You may love to cruise but when you stop and think about what they go through it gives you a greater respect for them! This is a must read if you are a cruise fan!

A bit too much sex and drinking for me

The story was an eye opener for cruisers, but if the crew do what Mr. Bruns says in this book, how do they ever get my dinner order right. There is a lot of drinking and bunk hopping on this. However, you can get a sense of the tremendous amount of work the crew does onboard, plus the conditions they get to live in.

    Laugh Out Loud

I found this book very entertaining. I have taken several cruises and often wondered about the employee work environment/lifestyle. I read this book during a long layover immediately following a cruise and laughed out loud at a few parts.

    A burst of Laughter!

I enjoyed this book very much. I've cruised all over and always wondered about the crew below. While reading this book in a park, I would burst out laughing and the laughs kept coming! In the future when I ask for another cup of coffee on a ship, I will appreciate what they go through.
