Paleontologist Kirk Johnson and artist Ray Troll traveled 5,000 miles around the American West searching for fossils and studying the rocks that contain them. As they report on their trip we are treated to a history of the Earth and early creatures such as ammonites, trilobites, dinosaurs, early mammals and plants such as giant broccoli. We also meet hundreds of folks, from rock hounds to bartenders. The book is lavishly illustrated with photos and Troll’s colorful pictures, which create a comic book quality that will appeal to YA readers. Johnson, the chief curator of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, writes in a casual style that is both educational and entertaining. He is the author of three other popular books, including Gas Trees and Car Turds: A Kids’ Guide to the Roots of Global Warming. Johnson makes the reader want to pull off the road at the nearest road cut and poke around. Students will be inspired to start hunting fossils of Archaeotherium, the Pig from Hell. Meet the Author


Kirk R. Johnson is vice president and chief curator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. He received his PhD in geology and paleobotany from Yale University in 1989, and did postdoctoral research in the rainforests of northern Australia before coming to Denver in 1991, where he directed the installation of the museum's Prehistoric Journey exhibit. Ray Troll's life goal has always been to be an artist. He earned a BA from Bethany College in 1977 and an MFA in studio arts from Washington State University in 1981. He moved to Alaska in 1983 to spend a summer helping his sister start a retail seafood store, got hooked on the area, and has remained in Alaska.

    FOR ALL AGES: SUPERB

    I purchased this book after viewing the traveling exhibit of the same name in Gainesville, FL.
    I fell in love with this book, the wonderful humor of the author and the way it made me want to go back out west with a tent and a hammer. (I am an adult). When my grandchildren are old enough, I will be reading and discussing this wonderful tome with them.
    The artwork, as expected, is beyond the pale; the commentary riveting. I want to go back to school to be a geologist!!
    Learning while enjoying is the ultimate high; this book provides both.
    BUY it, you won't be disappointed.
