Meet the Author

William H. Shellenberger has cruised the Chesapeake Bay with his family for more than a quarter century and has made the study of its numerous gunkholes his life's work. He's been into nearly every one of them, run aground finding shortcuts you can take and the ones you can't, and found the spots where you can hide from the crowds or become part of them. Most any weekend from early spring to late fall, Bill and his family can be found nosing their Westerly Berwick up yet another unexplored creek or inlet, their Tibetan Terriers pointing out a likely place to land.

This is the only guide I ever needed for Chesapeake Sailing

Bill Schellenberger gives very accurate accounts of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, with detailed descriptions of navigation into Rivers and Creeks, Nav aids or the lack thereof, facilities, shore accessiblity, and aesthetic appraisal. In many cases he gives extraordinary descriptions sheltered anchorages (with ratings), lists marina facilites and services offered, and even includes the type of boating traffic you will likely find in the area. We are avid sailors (and gunkholers) and found his guidance, especially in terms of controlling depth, invaluable.
