Gr 2-3-- Three stories about a wizard named Zeb; his talkative crow, Jason; a little ghost who haunts the bell tower; hordes of toads, mice, and beetles in the dungeon; and a baby dragon in the ballroom, all of whom live together in a crumbling castle. In the first story, the braggart crow claims to be a raven, and an annoyed Zeb temporarily turns him to stone. Later, Jason helps the ghost regain her faded scariness, and teaches the dragon to fly. Mild stories with a low excitement level, these offerings are short on action and long on words. The narrative is sometimes confusing, and odd little digressions occasionally impede the flow. And while this is not necessarily a defect, the text demands closer attention than average second graders may be accustomed to giving. Craig's familiar drawings show Zeb, Jason, and the rest of this cast in black-and-white pen and ink, generously displayed on almost every page. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX
