Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
The kids in this fourth book in the "High School Musical" series face two big challenges along with the normal teen turmoil. The SATs are on the horizon, and Principal Matsui has announced that the theme of the Halloween Festival will be Future Fantasy. The kids are expected to show up at the party wearing costumes indicating how they see themselves in twenty years or so. Some of the teens feel confident about their futures. Sharpay believes her triple-threat talents of acting, singing and dancing will make her a star; Zeke knows he will be a chef. Some feel less confident. Troy has assumed he'd be a basketball player, but he's getting nervous about a scout's upcoming visit to see him play. Chad loves hip-hop, but knows he doesn't have the talent to be a performer. Gabriella is confident about her future as a scientist, but faces a different problem: She doesn't know what costume she can wear that won't be drab. In addition, because she is considered the "brainiac" of the class, Gabriella is assigned by Principal Matsui to lead the SAT tutoring sessions. The kids are appealing, and the storyline might reassure some readers as the characters come to realize that they need not plot out their entire lives while in high school. It's easy to see why these books are so popular among preteens. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
