William Speir has done it again! I loved the first book in this series, Knights of the Saltier, but second book is even better! It left me breathless, racing to get to the last page so I'd know how it ended. The suspense grabbed me from the first chapter and held onto me through the last chapter. I couldn't put it down. William Speir has proven that he know how to tell a great story without boring the reader with a lot of unnecessary details. He gets to the point and makes you feel like you are right there beside the characters as they struggle to overcome everything standing in their way. The story of Crusaders of the Saltier picks up a couple of years after the end of Book 1. The same characters from Book 1 are there, but there is a new character: Emily McCafferty, a member of the Order of the Saltier who becomes very close to the lead character of the trilogy, Tom Anderson. Their unexpected love story happens in the middle of the biggest crisis the country has seen since the Civil War. The very popular President has been assassinated and there have been several terrorist attacks all around the country. The new President decides that, for the country's own protection, there needs to be some changes. He begins to transform the country into a police state, detaining citizens and abolishing rights in the name of "safety and security." The Order of the Saltier realizes that there's more going on than anyone knows, and when some members of The Order are captured by government forces, Tom and his fellow Knights must choose between helping to restore freedom or just watching helplessly as the country plunges deeper into darkness. Their choice places Tom and his fellow Knights on a collision course with forces that are bent on total control of the country, and in an intense firefight underneath the Capitol building in Washington DC, the fate of the country is finally decided. William Speir has written a story that will thrill the readers. The story is believable because it could all too easily happen, and exciting because of how Speir chooses to have the characters overcome the challenges facing them. This is the second book in the Order of the Saltier Trilogy, and I can't wait for the final book in the trilogy to be released. If Books 1 and 2 are any indication, Book 3 should be incredible!
