Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rachel Wadham
Having mended and formed new relationships with boyfriends according to the rules of their made-up breakup code in The Heartbreakers (Scholastic, 2007/VOYA February 2008), the four friends return in this sequel with new problems. Alexia, Raven, and Sydney are working hard to please their boyfriends while facing the challenges of physical and emotional distance. In addition, Alexia is deciding the right time to have sex. In their midst, Kelly is without a boyfriend, but when an attractive guy catches her attention, the friends consult the crush code of thirty-eight rules designed to help Kelly get her man and assist the others in keeping theirs. When they apply the code, their romantic relationships and their own friendship change dramatically as they make important decisions and move into the future. Teen girls who face their own romantic challenges will find connections here, but beyond that tie this novel has little to recommend it. The characters lack commitment, realism, and emotional depth. Many of the emotional issues they face are not completely resolved so there is no thematic discovery. The contrived, impractical, and childish rules provide no real structure or wisdom to the story. The narrative description constantly emphasizes mundane and unnecessary details that only serve to distract the reader. The plot is clichEd, and constant shifts between character viewpoints makes it confusing. The successful conclusion gives fans of the first something to enjoy, but anyone else looking for a serious read would do well to look elsewhere. Reviewer: Rachel Wadham

Gr 7-10

It's summer vacation and Kelly, Sydney, Alexia, and Raven are back in this frothy teen soap opera. Kelly doesn't have a boyfriend so the girls write the 35-rule Crush Code to help her get one. Meanwhile, photographer Sydney's back together with Drew, but madly crushing on Quin, who volunteers in the local hospital's pediatric ICU. Raven and Horace are still a couple, and still making beautiful music together, but when Horace goes out of town for a month, Raven falls for Blake, a semi-famous skateboarder. Alexia and Ben's love would be perfect, except that he pressures her into doing something she's not ready for. Before long, Drew falls in love with Kelly, and Sydney and Kelly's friendship is strained. Finally the girls get together to put the crush rules to rest, and everything is tied up into a neat package. Teens will enjoy this story, with its focus on romance and friendship, but lack of skill in the telling makes it pale in comparison to Ann Brashares's "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" series (Delacorte).-Catherine Ensley, Latah County Free Library District, Moscow, ID

Kirkus Reviews
Four best friends who failed to learn from their mistakes are back for a summer of boys, breakups and text messaging. In this sequel to The Heartbreakers (2007), Alexia, Raven and Sydney are all convinced their relationships are pretty good. Using their dating expertise, they come up with a list of rules for their single friend Kelly on how to properly entice a crush. Kelly needs to do as her friends say and not as they do, however, because despite their stable relationships with their stomach-butterflies-inducing boyfriends, they're developing stomach-butterfly-inducing crushes on new boys. The Crush Code (a list of rules for crushes) puts a strain on the friendship and enhances the drama that is the microcosm of high-school relationships. Add in a little family turmoil and the end result is fun yet ultimately uninspiring, with indistinct characters and vanilla dialogue. Those who love to love will enjoy the never-ending supply of physically perfect boys and might sympathize with the girls, whose friendship almost comes to a halt over a boy. More critical romance readers will have trouble distinguishing between characters and keeping the story lines straight. (Fiction. 14 & up)

I really, really really loved this book. Loved all the drama and every single problem theo the girls were facing seemed like real problems teens face.
My favorite drama was with Kelly and Drew. Their story was so cute. And I loved Raven and Horace and Blake love triangle.
By the end of the story, I hated Sydney... but overall i loved this book soooooooopoooooooooooooo much!!!!!

After cementing their lifelong friendship with The Breakup Code, Alexia, Kelly, Raven, and Sydney are heading into the summer before their senior year. <BR/><BR/>Between Raven's depression over the four-week loss of her boyfriend, Horace, to the city of Detroit, Sydney fulfilling volunteer obligations at the local hospital and vowing to make the second round of her relationship with Drew work, not to mention Alexia being in love for the first time in her life, the former can't help but worry that she and her friends might be drifting apart. <BR/><BR/>When Alexia spots Kelly's hot new kick-boxing instructor, she sees the perfect solution to both her concerns and Kelly's state of singlehood: The Crush Code. Thirty-eight rules guaranteed to nab the guy of their dreams. <BR/><BR/>Pretty soon all four girls are trying out the code - Sydney on fellow volunteer Quinn, Raven on her new neighbor, Blake, and Kelly on her instructor, Adam; but the code can't distract Kelly from the boy she really likes. <BR/><BR/>The one boy in the world she can never have... <BR/><BR/>It's been a long time since I read a book that made me cry, but Pamela Wells does such an incredible job portraying the roller-coaster ride of emotions that come with young love. Whether reading about Alexia's uncertainty about losing her virginity to Ben, Raven's desire to remain faithful to the boy she loves while feeling intensely attracted to someone else, the thrill of new flirtations, or the pain of ultimate betrayal, I was transported into the emotions of each characters' journey. <BR/><BR/>THE CRUSHES is an excellent, heartfelt novel about friendship, first love, and surviving the difficulties life throws your way.
