Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cherie Ilg Haas
Funny, light sarcasm is used in this disgustingly detailed book about, you guessed it, crust and spray, from the human head. Broken up into four chapters, it covers the details of things like snot and sneezing, coughing and wheezing, "eye crud," and "ear germs." Although scientific in nature, this book is well written for its intended audience; a casual voice makes it easy to read and comprehend the details. It even includes a fake snot recipe. The layout helps the reader flow right through it, with creative use of fonts and font colors, fun cartoon images of germs balanced with photos, and "gross facts" that are set up as mini-sidebars throughout. Young readers are sure to cover their mouths when sneezing or coughing and take the time to wash their hands more often. This book includes a glossary, featured bibliography, suggested reading, and an index. It is part of the "Gross Body Science" series. Reviewer: Cherie Ilg Haas
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6–These titles work the ick factor to the max with their irreverent style and over-the-top look at body functions. Solid information layered between sarcastic comments and kid-friendly terminology like fart, poop, barf, and puke will keep readers engaged. “Gross fact” and other call-out boxes include historical and scientific details. Labeled, captioned (and graphic) photographs, cartoon-style illustrations, and micrographs add information, though some of the micrographics are incompletely labeled. Read these on an empty stomach.
