Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kirsten Shaw
Sixteen-year-old goth girl Raven Madison is looking forward to quietly celebrating her seventeenth birthday with her vampire boyfriend Alexander. She desperately hopes he will give her what she wants more than anything and turn her into a vampire. However, Alexander's friends have other plans. Raven and Alexander discover Jagger and his crew never left Dullsville, as they promised they would. They are now planning to open up a hip new dance club, The Crypt, for the Dullsville teens. Raven is suspicious that Jagger has an ulterior motive for opening up the club, one that may put the people of Dullsville in danger. Worse, she fears that the vampire population will be discovered and the love of her life will be driven out of town. Schreiber puts a light-hearted, if not humorous spin on the paranormal romance. Although Raven is immature in many aspects and lacks much depth it is hard not to become fond of her singularity, tenderness, and warmth. She is an oddity in her little town of Dullsville, but remains true to who she is. Readers may want to be familiar with the series to understand the back stories of the many characters, but it is not necessary as there is enough background information provided so as not to leave out new readers Book eight in the "Vampire Kisses" series. Yeah...

I haven't bought the book yet because it's a little too expensive for the quick evening read I'd get out of it. Only to read more reviews and find out that she's not even close to wrapping up this series. I think the point could have easily gotten across in 3 maybe 4 books. The more the storyline gets severly stretched, the less I like the author. With all that said...this one detail has been bothering me a long time. Raven's parents are ex-hippies. Her aunt is still a hippy....I am 36. My parents are ex-hippies...which means Raven's parents are somewhere around 57 to 62 approx...and Raven has a younger brother? Really? Most kids Raven's age have grandparents that age. If the author had any kind of realistic timeline here, her parents would be in their 40's at the most. I realize completely that this is a fictional book...but just smashing 2 generations together that don't remotely belong together? I thought, if she wrote the book 20 years ago and just got it published...that would make since. But she has put Raven in all the latest technology...so this just means the author didn't care, and her publisher didn't bother to correct how incredibly stupid it sounds. Ellen, if you read this- please finish the story with 1 big book that explains it all and wraps the whole thing up so you can start writing other things. The writing now is becoming repetitive and boring. I started the series, now I just want it to end, because it just seems as though you are riding a cash cow. $10 for a book that isn't even 150 pages with no plot, isn't worth reading.

    eh its ok

I started out reading this when I was a preteen, but now that ive moved on to more challenging, classy reads, this seems a bit redundant. It was good for the first 4 books, but unlike Anna Godberson's the Luxe series, Ellen just seems to be stretching the series out in an unneeded way. I probably would think more highly of it if I hadn't read more historical books, and if vampire books weren't more than plentiful nowadays.

    more from this reviewer

    Review: Cryptic Cravings

This series really is a guilty pleasure for. For a teen vampire book, it's really very immature at times. I doubt it has very much cross over appeal and think it better fits pre-teens, etc.

I was really hoping that Raven would begin to act her age after the events of the last book. Within the first couple pages, I saw that I was wrong. I think no matter what her age, Raven will always been immature. It's how the author wrote her. In this installment, she really made me roll my eyes a lot. She was so wishy-washy on the idea of the club. It was like it was really hard for her to see all sides of the equation. I was also amazed that it's book 8 and it's just now being voiced that Trevor might actually like her. Really...I've know this since book 1.

I like Alexander, and actually won't mind a book (or even a couple chapters) told from his point of view. I still wonder how it's possible that there are things that Raven doesn't know about him. He also extremely patient with her flighty ways. The rest of the characters are an interesting mix. Scarlett and Onyx seem a little shallow and I hope that Raven doesn't count on them to much. Jagger and Luna are up to something, just like always. Although, I admit, I didn't see that one coming. And poor Sebastien...I think he needs to stop falling in love with every girl that walks by.
I'm really at the point that I think the story needs to conclude. I won this one, but I would have borrowed it from the library. I will continue to do so until I get completely feed up. Hopefully the series comes to a close before then.
