Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Paula J. Woodward, MD (University of Utah School of Medicine)
Description: This book gives a detailed overview of imaging of the acute abdomen. Included in the second edition are newer modalities such as spiral CT and color Doppler.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide an integrated multimodality approach to acute abdominal disorders.
Audience: The targeted group is radiology residents, but it is also well suited for any practicing radiologist.
Features: Each chapter covers the complete gamut of acute conditions (trauma, infection, etc.) for a particular organ. Although the emphasis is on CT and ultrasound, MRI and angiography are included where appropriate. The book is well illustrated with excellent case material. "Key Concept" boxes appear throughout each chapter, which succinctly summarize important points.
Assessment: This book offers an excellent in-depth review of all facets of acute abdominal pathology. It presents a logical, systematic approach for the diagnostic work-up, stressing the strengths and weaknesses of each imaging modality. One can read details within the text or quickly flip through the key concept boxes and glean the major points. This book is extremely useful for residents, particularly before starting call.

Booknews
An integrated text that combines more recent imaging observations with CT and sonography, focusing on acute abdominal disorders. It deals primarily with common clinical disorders, emphasizing not only recent technical advances, but the also the strengths and weakness of each imaging modality. This edition reflects the important clinical and technical advances in sonography and CT since the first edition of 1989. Most notable are the development of spiral CT and color flow imaging; a separate chapter focusing on technique has been added to highlight these newer methods. Profusely illustrated. Annotation c.
