Overview

Since the mid-nineteenth century, Cuba and the United States have shared a tumultuous history. During the Spanish-American War, the United States assisted Cuba in overthrowing Spanish rule, then went on to occupy the island nation. In 1902, Cuba gained its independence from the United States and experienced a string of governments dominated by corrupt politicians, until a young rebel leader named Fidel Castro staged a coup and assumed power in 1959. Castro's reign has been seen as a blessing and a curse: Although Cuba ranks among the most literate countries in Latin America and boasts a healthcare system that compares favorably with those in developed nations, its people also experience substantial economic hardships and international isolation. In 2006, Castro began to show signs of his own mortality when he transferred powers over to his brother, Raul, who has promised to remove some of the restrictions that have limited the average Cuban's daily life. Cuba introduces readers to the country's storied history and its people, and it examines what the future will bring to a post-Fidel Cuba.
