Cubism

Overview

Imagine a portrait with too many noses or a landscape without a horizon. Why paint a violin in disjointed pieces or a wobbling Eiffel Tower? The Cubists looked at the world from new angles and challenged the art of the past. Cubism was a revolution in shape and form--but how and why did it happen?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In an age when art was limited to what was seen, a group of artists decided to change all that. Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp and many others created the world of Cubism. In her book, Linda Bolton explains and demonstrates the tremendous departure cubism made in the world of art. A part of the "Art Revolutions" series, this book brings to life the great change cubism brought to art, not only in its different form and look but in the way we interpret what we see. The format of the book is wonderful. Different artists are discussed using bits of their life history and what led them to work in this art form. Along with the information are examples of each artist's art. Throughout the book are wonderful paintings that give the book a tremendous amount of color and style. Included with the information and works are interpretations of the works, allowing the reader to understand how the cubist artists saw their subjects and created their paintings. This is helpful but also somewhat limiting in that the readers are not able to establish their own interpretation of the works. This is a wonderful book written in understandable text suitable for students of all ages. 2000, Belitha Press Limited, Ages 5 to 15, $16.95. Reviewer: John D. Orsborn
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Good introductions to revolutionary movements in modern art. Each volume begins with a brief, illustrated history of the style, its influences, and founders, followed by 10 double-page spreads focusing on individual artists. These spreads, arranged in chronological order, include some biographical background and an analysis of two or three examples of each person's work. Informative texts are accompanied by well-chosen, vibrant reproductions representative of each style. Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Robert Delaunay are some of the painters featured in Cubism while Pop examines the work of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Patrick Caulfield, among others. Supplemental information is featured in colorful sidebars and a final spread includes the work of several additional artists associated with the movements. Each volume also includes a useful table of contents and a list of galleries.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
