School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-- Basic information on topics of some relevance to beginning readers. Cubs and Colts teaches the names of baby and adult mammals. Their size relationships and the number of young a mother may have are also explained in a simple and straightforward text. This title is the more conceptually successful of the two books. In What's the Weather Today? , exceedingly elementary descriptions of various types of weather, rather than the scientific principles behind them, are depicted. In both titles, the texts are accompanied by attractive, full-color photographs. Questions posed throughout will stretch children's thinking; a list of ``Words You Know'' is included. However, by the time children are able to read these books independently, they will be ready for more detailed information. Geared to more advanced readers or for parents to share, Hans-Heinrich Isenbart's Baby Animals on the Farm (Putnam, 1984), Merrill Windsor's Baby Farm Animals (National Geographic Society, 1984; o.p.), and books on weather in the ``Let's Read-and-Find-Out Series'' (HarperCollins) by Franklyn Branley will be more satisfying, with more in-depth understandings of these topics. Those seeking information on weather will find the ``Now I Know'' series (Troll) adequate. --April L. Judge, Thousand Oaks Library, CA
