Cuckoo is beautiful. Trouble is, she's lazy. She never does her share of work-that is, until a field fire threatens the season's seed crop and Cuckoo is the only one who can save it. But will she risk harming her lovely feathers by flying through the thick smoke and flames?

My art classes (k-3) loved the story about this vain bird who has trouble getting along with others in the bird community. We talked about the beautiful metal coutouts reminescent of milagros as well at the festive paper cut-outs. We cut grey animal, bird and symetrical shapes from grey paper and mounted them on brilliant backgrounds. Working on our cutting and pasting skills and reinforcing our interest in another culture made a rich and interesting art project..a sure winner for multi cultural month or any time of the year!
