Overview

Two toddlers are on the prowl for a family cuddle in a playful celebration of cozy togetherness that will bring smiles to "monsters" and little ones alike.

It's early morning and the adults are asleep. But the little ones are up — and they're on the move. Down the hall, "into the monster's cave" they go. There are scary snores coming from in there, but the toddlers, giggling all the while, creep on in. Sure enough, there's a tumble of tickling and scrambling and mingling and tangling, till the "monsters" finally rise up — and it's time for cuddling, cuddling, cuddling.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Unfortunate word choice and a disconcerting image mar an otherwise engaging story of two toddlers' early-morning adventure in this Australian import. Gleeson's rhyming text is told mainly in the voice of the older child. The unnamed narrator encourages her (or possibly his) younger sibling to wake up, roll out of bed, crawl down the hall and join her in climbing into their parents' bed. Although Vivas takes care to show that both children land on soft covers, the illustration of the baby landing head-down on a hardwood floor is unsettling. Also potentially disturbing is Gleeson's use of "mangle" in the litany of ways that the family interacts as they hug and cuddle. Parents willing to overlook these quibbles may be won over by Vivas's softly rounded, richly colored watercolor-and-pencil illustrations and by Gleeson's obvious affection for the cozy family ritual she describes. But more than most, this is one picture book that readers will want to preview before reading (or purchasing). (Picture book. 2-4)

Meet the Author

Libby Gleeson has written more than twenty books for children, including WHERE'S MOM?, illustrated by Craig Smith, and THE GREAT BIG SCARY DOG and UNCLE DAVID, both illustrated by Armin Greder. Of CUDDLE TIME, she says her aim was to write an "intensely rhythmic text suited to the very young child." Inspiration came when she recalled "my own three girls, and the years they spent coming into our bed." Libby Gleeson lives in Australia.

Julie Vivas has illustrated many books for children, including SLEEPY PENDOODLE by Malachy Doyle; POSSUM MAGIC and WILFRED GORDON MCDONALD PARTRIDGE by Mem Fox; and THE VERY BEST OF FRIENDS by Margaret Wild. Of this book she says, "Libby Gleeson's text drew me into the early morning game of a toddler and her baby brother." Julie Vivas lives in Australia.
