Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King

Stephen King, the world's bestselling novelist, was educated at the University of Maine at Orono. He lives with his wife, the novelist Tabitha King, and their children in Bangor, Maine.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Disappointed with the typos in the ebook.

I had read this book before the old fashioned way but it had been a while so I bought the ebook. I was VERY disappointed with all the typos! They were all over the place. Not just one or two, but all over the book.

    Good book I ever read

This book leaves you hanging at the beginning of it. I like it and own it. I would recommend it to the people that can handle reading about a dog that has rabies.

All I can say is wow!

This was such a wonderful book. I was always on the edge of my seat while reading Cujo. I would suggest first time readers of SK would start with this one, it is so good!

Terrific thriller with one big flaw

With Cujo Stephen King finally mastered the thriller.

I've been reading Stephen King's books in order of publication and the last few (The Dead Zone and Firestarter) just didn't stack up to what he'd written before. It was clear he was trying to craft thrillers rather than the out-and-out horror of his earlier novels, but was coming up short.

With the simple premise of Cujo (a rabid Saint Bernard keeps a mother and child trapped in a sweltering Pinto) he knocked it out of the park.

King's trademark strong characters and multiple sub-plots dealing with the lives of small town people (in this case - a badly ended affair, a mother trying to show her bright son that there is more to life than small-town Maine and an ad agency dealing with a disaster) are all here as well, but he was able to tie every one of them in to the main struggle. Each 'story' supports and adds to another until they all dove-tail together in a way that never felt forced.

The book starts slowly, showing us slices of the various characters lives before dropping them each on their own personal chute to hell. Cujo is the darkest King book I can think of. The recurring theme of the book is the cruelty of fate. All of the threads that the book follows hinge on good people whose lives are thrown into chaos through sheerest coincidence or events beyond their control.

One problem I do have with the book is the supernatural undercurrent. Overall, it didn't detract from the story and could have been an interesting element. But at various times King goes out of his way to show that there are some ghostly things happening in Castle Rock. The thing is, this aspect of the book never seems to go anywhere. Tad being afraid of the closet monster and marrying that fear to the beast holding him hostage in the car was effective. Pointing out that the contents of the closet had indeed been rearranged by something other than the family in the house seemed pointless. Tad's fear of the monster would have been just as effective if we believed that the thing in the closet was inspired more by gravy than the grave.

The monster in the closet aside, I really enjoyed Cujo. It streamed along and held my interest. The cuts to the various side stories were effective and interesting and worked to build the tension. Cujo is not the thriller that Misery is, but it is respectable on its own.

    Cujo

I thought Cujo was overall a nice book. Starts of slow and kind of confusing. But when you get to the middle it will pick up and get interesting.

    I Also Recommend:

    a good book

The book begins slow but as cujo makes his first kill it gets way better. and then it gets boring again. overall most of it was boring and what cujo does do was pretty descent horror for a book and king should have had more attackings done by cujo, but what the rabid (possibly possesed) monster beast does do is good enough. still it is nothing compared to his other books.

    Love King's older novels

True Stephen King...right up there with Christine and From a Buick 8.Between then and now He's still a wizzard of the story plot. I would recommend this book as a truly worth while experience....Oh and by the way....the magic he has gets him into your head...you cannot get into his. Greg W

Cujo is one of Stephen King's best!

The story itself was great. However, there were a lot of errors (i.e., spelling, grammar) in the NOOK edition.

This book made me want to cry for the dog. I was so frustrated

This book made me want to cry for the dog. I was so frustrated with the mother in this story I was tempted to write King a letter telling him his characters were horrible. Like he would care! lol But the point of his writing was to captivate you in the story and make you mad and sad all in the same boat. Well he did a very good job at playing a joke with the emotions in this one.

I really didn't care for this book. The ending feels very slapped on, like he was tired of writing the book and just wanted to end it.
