Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Cultural celebrations are often a part of the curriculum in lower elementary grades, and the study of traditions in various countries can bring those celebrations to life. In the Australia volume of the "Cultural Traditions in My World" series, readers learn about Australia's public holidays. Many are similar to holidays in America (e.g., Easter, Labor Day), although some may have different names and dates. There are also holidays very different from those American children know, and students can learn about Mabo Day (honoring one man's fight for Aboriginal rights), National Wattle Day (the celebration of Australia's national flower), and even the special significance of an Australian's twenty-first birthday. Full-color photographs are attractively placed on each page, with captions that educate and entertain. Text size is geared to the younger reader, with bold-print words defined in the glossary. Each page also features a block of text entitled "Did You Know?" that explains something unique about the topic on that page. A short index is also included. This well-designed book will be a good addition to any library or primary classroom where the study of Australia is part of the curriculum. Reviewer: Magi Evans
