Children's Literature - Marilyn Meyerson
Contemporary photos and basic text provide information about Chinese national holidays and cultural traditions. This book is arranged chronologically beginning with Chinese New Year in January/February and ending with National Day, October 1. It makes clear the distinction between the lunar and Gregorian calendars, noting that Chinese people use both. The book also delineates between national holidays and festivals in which families celebrate culture and tradition. Opening pages provide introductory information about China and the importance of family life. Each festival receives a double-page spread. The pages are well-designed and graphically pleasing. Many photos show children celebrating holidays with family and friends. "Did you know?" sections offering interesting information tidbits appear throughout the pages. This book covers more holidays and festivals than can be found in Crabtree's China: the Culture. The text here is simpler. A table of contents, glossary and index will support young elementary school researchers. Older students, however, will likely need additional resources beyond this cursory introduction. No additional print or web resources are offered. This book is part of the "Cultural Traditions in My World" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Meyerson
