Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Beginning with personal celebrations like weddings and baptisms, and then progressing through the calendar of major holidays from New Year's Day on, this book gives a good overview of traditional celebrations in Greece. As part of the "Cultural Traditions in My World" series, the focus is on traditions that are meaningful and appealing to children. The photographic illustrations feature children in all of the celebrations, and Peppas takes care to ensure that the text is written in a style that will appeal to children. "Did You Know" sidebars throughout the book provide fun facts outside of the main text on each page. Of particular interest to readers are the holidays that are not celebrated in the Americas, such as "Name Days," and the traditions associated with those holidays. Vocabulary words are bolded in the text and defined in a glossary at the end of the book. There is also a nice index. While the books in this series should not be used as a sole source of information about any of the featured cultures, they are sure to spark interest in readers to find out more about particular cultures. Recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
