Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
This title provides an overview of many aspects of the country of Cameroon, including geography, history, government, economy, environment, peoples, lifestyle, religion, language, arts, leisure, festivals, and food with two recipes. Cameroon lies on the west coast of Africa. It was a French colony until it gained independence in 1960. In 1972 East and West Cameroon united to become the United Republic of Cameroon. "Cameroon is proud that the country has enough resources to feed its people." It has a reputation for economic stability. French and English are official languages, but there are 24 major African language groups and 250 ethnic groups. These differences can be seen in varieties of housing and hair styles. National parks preserve plants and animals and attract many tourists. However, active deforestation is a concern. Traditional African religions are practiced by about 40% of the people, Christianity by 40%, and Islam by 20%. Colored photographs illustrate the text. Maps include a map and list of coordinates of places mentioned in the text, a map of economic entities and facts, and a map with notes on cultural sites. A Cameroon timeline beside a timeline of world events, glossary, lists of resources for further information, bibliography, and index are also included. This entry in the "Cultures of the World" series will enable teens to find material for reports from this interesting account. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

Located in Central-West Africa, the Republic of Cameroon lies in the tropical climate zone. A nation of great natural wealth and beauty, Cameroon has done remarkably well compared to other post-colonial African nations. This nation of grasslands, mountains, and vast lakes has numerous linguistic and cultural groups. Cameroon is a land that was once dominated by Germany, Britain, and France, and has achieved a level of national identity and stability. It's recent political history has also been marked by far less violence than many of its neighbors. This book tells the story of Cameroon and the diverse people who make up its population. Particular attention is paid to issues such as cultural rituals, religion, family life, economic development, and the flora and fauna of this land. The illustrated format includes numerous color photographs that help to capture the dynamism of the nation. The charm of the people of Cameroon shines through both the fact-filled text and the illustrations. This edition of the "Cultures of the World" series is useful in understanding the changing needs of a relatively new African nation. 2000, Benchmark Books, $35.64. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Greg M. Gr 6-10-It may seem hard to imagine that such a small volume could be teeming with so many problems, but this one is. Some are errors of omission, such as the lack of any reference to health care and disease. Others are a combination of misinformation and confusing language as is the case with the description of the electoral process: "The president is elected for a period of five years by direct and secret universal suffrage." The vocabulary is confusing and the statement is inaccurate; constitutional changes were approved in 1995 that extended the president's term from five to seven years and placed term limits for the first time. There are also inconsistencies throughout. One description of President Ahidjo reads: "His greatest achievement was to successfully and peacefully oversee the emergence of Cameroon as one united country-." Just six pages earlier, readers were told that during his rise to power, "parties that failed to cooperate with this process were outlawed and their leaders arrested.-Military force was used to destroy the remnants of the UPC opposition to the new state." There are many such seeming contradictions. Although there is a need for material on this subject for reports and general interest reading, the faults far outweigh the benefits of this book. Jim Hathaway's Cameroon in Pictures (Lerner, 1999) is a slimmer volume, but infinitely more useful as a starting point for research.-Genevieve Ceraldi, Donnell Library Center, New York Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
