Meet the Author

Scott Cunningham practiced magic actively for over twenty years. He was the author of more than fifty books covering both fiction and non-fiction subject matter; sixteen of his titles are published by Llewellyn Publications. Scott's books reflect a broad range of interests within the New Age sphere, where he was very highly regarded. He passed from this life on March 28, 1993, after a long illness.

Read an Excerpt

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic, serves two purposes. First, it is a basic introduction to magic. It includes how magic works and how you can design spells that incorporate stones and metals. Author Scott Cunningham also describes how you can use stones for doing divinations, even using them as a type of Tarot.

But it is the second part where this book really shines. It reveals magical uses of over 100 crystals, gems, stones, and metals. Now, you may know what gold or quartz looks like, but do you know what peridot or staurolite look like? If not, don't worry. The book includes twenty-five full-color photos showing these and many other of the magical items described in this book so you can easily make select them for your magical purposes.

As a reference tool on the subject, there is nothing better. Pick a stone, gem, or metal and Scott shares planetary and elemental rulers along with magical powers and uses. Sun Bear, founder of the Bear Tribe, says that "Scott Cunningham's well-researched book, I feel, validates our feelings and thoughts about stones and minerals and their spiritual power." Anodea Judith, author of Wheels of Life, calls it "well-organized, well-researched and user-friendly." She also says that "this book is a splendid addition to the magical library."

These experts, and many more, agree that this book is a must. In fact, over 210,000 people have already made this book a part of their collections. So if you have ever wondered what secrets lie within the water-worn pebble lying on the beach or what energies pulse inside the stone on your finger or the gems around your neck, this is the book for you. You may discover that the very rocks you walk on could draw a new love into your life or help you financially.

    Highly recommended

As someone who has practiced Wicca for 20 years -- this is one of my two mainstays -- along with Cunningham's book on herbs, oils & brews. With those two books you don't need any other books on spells -- because you create your own. Most important his ethics are unimpeachable -- which you can't say about some Wiccan spell books. Two thumbs up on this and any other Cunningham book. I regularly buy Cunningham's books to give to non-Wiccans to explain the religion because I know he does it properly. Blessed be!

    Good first book

I been into 'Rock' magic my whole life because of my mom. This was my first book I have ever read and it really got me into it. It's a very good book, for a beginner, learning how everything works, but for more experienced people you might want to look at something different because this is a nice book but is really like a 'gemstone magic for dummys'. I still refer back to it when I need a quick look into a stone I don't know much about. I have and will always refer this to friends and family!

    CRYSTALS & ELIXIRS

This is a wonderful reference book on crystals. It includes properties of common crystals and even has some interesting folklore in some of the descriptions, which I have yet to find in any other crystal book. It also warns people who make elixirs which metals/gems are believed to be poisonous. If you make your own elixirs, it's a must have. It also tells which crystals have medicinal properties (such as smokey quartz) and has some beautiful photographs of crystals (such as malachite). I have bought three copies due to the fact that my family and friends keep conning me out of this book!! If you are looking for less common crystals you would need to use this book in conjunction with a more comprehensive book. Even so,I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves crystals and anyone interested in making their own elixirs.

    Nightmare table of contents

Merely lists chapter numbers vs NAMES of chapters. Have owned paperback version for many yrs and reference it often, wanted nook version for on the go. Took 15 minutes of searching and page flipping to find the STONES chapter that details metaphysical meanings. The search feature isnt spectacularly helpful either.

Sorry, but $3.99 would be plenty for this.

    Good reference

Lots of great information. But sadly the gem insert will not load. Which is a shame since I have many gems that were my dads that I cannot identify. Don't know if anyone who has the power to fix this glich reads reviews but it would nice to get it fixed. Good book to have but not having the table available makes me wish I hadn't wasted my money. So if you want the table, don't buy.
