Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati J.D.
Life-size sculptures made of clear tape and plastic wrap, art made from meat, mud, toothpicks, and candy wrappers, and 3-D chalk drawings by the "Pavement Picasso," are just some of the crazy creations readers will learn about in this book. This reviewer's personal favorite is the life-size horse sculptures made of driftwood by an artist in England. As with all the Ripley books, a publisher's disclaimer precedes the text, noting that it cannot be held responsible for any errors. Certainly some of the entries stretch the imagination, such as the eight-man cement canoe that floats and an artist that paints with his "butt" (yes, you read that correctly). It is true that some of the designs are "extraordinary" and "weird," but the creations in this book are relatively tame compared to many depicted in other Ripley books. Young readers are sure to be entertained by the full-color photos and concise descriptions of dozens of unusual inventions. This title, which has an index at the back of the book, is one in the publisher's series entitled, "The Remarkable...Revealed." Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D.
