Overview

This beautiful book and accompanying CD features 10 carols as well as songbook lyrics, music notation, and illustrations by H. A. Rey. The 30-minute CD will include original recordings of these songs: O Christmas Tree, Deck the Halls, We Three Kings, Good King Wenceslas, I Saw Three Ships, O Come, All Ye Faithful, The First Noel, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, and Silent Night. With gold foil on the cover, its classic illustration style, and cd of original music, this is truly a gift book to treasure.

Joyce Raskin, Chick Graning, Joe Propatier, of the popular band Scarce, and Matt White provide the original music. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Joyce Raskin says, "Our band has reinterpreted H. A. Rey's traditional Christmas Carols as a folksy, lighthearted, and kid-friendly set of recordings—a little Carter family, Mazzy Star, and Buddy Holly mixed together. We hope it's musical fun for kids of all ages."

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Curious George shows his enthusiasm for the Christmas holiday when he strikes a pose with his open carol book on the flashy, gold cover of this book. The body of the book contains ten well-known Christmas carols. Each carol is accompanied by delightful illustrations that offer much for young readers no matter how often they look at the book. Simple musical staffs make up part of each spread while the words to the carols, in poetic form, make up the rest. The staffs exude whimsy with "notes" depicted as everything from colorful light bulbs to sailing ships, holly leaves to jumping sheep, stars, and more. Lyrics under the staffs match up to the beginning of each carol. A 30-minute CD of all the songs is added in order to enable youngsters to hear them. However, music on the CD has been reinterpreted to come across with a folksy quality that does not seem as though it will appeal to children. Songs are fairly slow, somewhat off-key, and do not give a true representation of the original carols. The entertaining illustrations hold much interest, and the book may be best read (or sung with the child) without the CD. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury

Meet the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.
