Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
Though the original Curious George characters were created and drawn by H. A. Rey, the art in this book was apparently done by someone else; but the main characters remain a little brown monkey and his friend, the man in a yellow hat. After a day out of doors "exploring and listening," George returns home to "a strange sound in his house." The reader, by turning the pages and lifting flaps, attempts without success to help George discover the source of the sound. Curious George goes into his backyard and finds the man in the yellow hat, who explains that the noise is made by a cricket, and suggests that George go back inside to try to catch it. When George comes back outside with the cricket in a bag and opens it to show the man in the yellow hat what he has found, the cricket leaps out of the bag and back into the house. The cricket, his new friend of the title, thinks it is his house, too! This pleasant little paperback book is printed in bright colors on light but sturdy card stock that will stand up to many lifts of the flaps, and at a sensible price, it will make a welcome gift for any young child. Meet the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.
