Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
This Curious George story based, on a teleplay by Scott Gray, provides an introduction to the library and the way that books are organized. Mrs. Dewey, the librarian has asked George to act in her place while she headed for her book club. When various friends of George's arrive to request books, he first finds one based on color and decides to arrange the books that way, then another friend cannot remember the color but knows that the book is big. Once again George sorts the books and this time based on size. When friend Steve arrives to find books about space, they are not where he expected them to be. George ever curious considers the possibility that books are organized by subject. Mrs. Dewey confirms that and further explains that, within subject, books are organized by the last name of the author. Unfortunately, she never mentions the name of the system (named after Melville Dewey), nor the name of the alphabetic sequencing of author names—which is called "Cuttering." Two activities for sorting are included on the closing pages. A level 1 book in the "Green Light readers" series, which is also identified as appropriate for grade 2, Guided Reading Level J, Reading Recovery level 17, and a Lexile level of 480L. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Meet the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.
