Children's Literature - Rae Valabek
The second book in the "Big Book of Words" Series follows a set of twins to preschool. This book is reminiscent of works by Richard Scarry. Each page features a large picture and lots of smaller ones. Under each small picture is the word that describes that picture. Major events in preschool and kindergarten are dealt with via large busy pictures. Such events include the first day, eating, the playground, and special occasions. Worthy of special note is that the teacher is a man.
School Library Journal
PreS-An introduction to preschool through words associated with the many experiences young children may have there. Starting with "First Day," words such as school bus, backpack, red light, lunch box, bell, etc., are illustrated with small pictures of each object. Larger double-page pictures of families on their way to school show some but not all of the objects. Art class, gym, playtime, lunch, rest period, and other activities are similarly pictured with opportunity for identification. Detailed illustrations done in pen and watercolor have a whimsical charm. A comforting way to reassure youngsters about their first preschool experience.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

    Highly recommend

I bought this book because it mentioned it was similar to a Richard Scarry book, which my daughter loves. When we first "read" it, I wasn't sure because there is no story, just pictures with labels. Fortunately my daughter LOVES it! She takes it out and sits on the floor telling me what she will see when she goes to Preschool. The book includes a lot in order to touch upon all types of schools. Even though this isn't a book to read with my daughter, it opens the door to many good discussions, which I think is more important. I am very pleased with this book.

    A Must Have

We have had this book for three years, and I am now using it for my second pre-schooler. I didn't realize how valuable it would be until my 3 year old told me that she wasn't going to pre-school. She decided that instead she was staying home to hold my hand. We have been pouring over this book for about 2 weeks now and her attitude has changed. She has noticed that there is a child crying in one picture then the same child is happy in the next. She also noticed that parents are dropping off children that aren't the happiest, then they are being picked up extremely happy. The illustrations show kids what to expect when they get to pre-school. This book may take away your childs fears of leaving your side.
