Editorial Reviews

Dallas Morning News
There's a curly wave sweeping the nation and Lorraine Massey is leading the charge.
Library Journal
Ironing your hair. Wrapping it. Setting it on juice cans (or, worse, soup cans). Plastering it with Dippity-Do. Since the Sixties, women with curly or wavy hair have been denying the obvious and trying to get that stick-straight look. Curls are finally in again, but a lot of curly types have no idea how to drop the blow dryer and let nature take its course. Along comes Massey, founder and co-owner of Devachan, a New York salon catering to these women. Part inspiration (you, too, can shed your inhibitions and discover your inner curl) and part instruction, this book gives excellent advice for cutting, styling, and caring for curly hair. Massey begins by explaining how curly hair differs from straight hair. She then distinguishes among three types of curly hair (corkscrew, Botticelli, and wavy), explains how to decide your type, and provides a detailed program for each. Helpful illustrations and entertaining "Curly Girl Confessions" abound. Massey's enthusiasm is infectious, her advice is clear and cogent, and her book is unique; there is as yet nothing else out there to help curly girls manage their hair. The 71/2" by 61/2" format and a few worksheet pages may seem problematic for libraries, but ignore all that. Some 65 percent of your women patrons have curly or wavy hair, and they need this book. Highly recommended for public libraries. [Coming in August from Three Rivers Press is hairstylist Ouidad's Curl Talk. QUIZ: Are You a Curly Girl?

If spring is not just in the air, but in your hair, you might be a curly girl. Just take the following quiz, and find out if the Curly Girl: The Handbook holds the secrets to your future hair success.

1. Do you often wear your hair tied back in a ponytail?

2. Does your hair develop volume in humid, hot, or wet weather?

3. Does your hair make you feel out of control?

4. Do you find yourself crying after every haircut?

5. Look at old photographs and recall how you felt about your hair—and yourself—on the day the picture was taken. Was there a strong correlation between your hair and your mood?

6. Do you almost always have a haze of frizz around your head?

7. Do you blow-dry your hair so often that its texture is as dry and brittle as a piece of melba toast?

8. Does your budget for products to straighten or relax your hair exceed your annual tax-deductible contributions to charity?

9. Do you live in fear of humidity, sweating, spontaneous sex, a shower with your lover—or any weather or activity that might unmask you as a curly girl?

10. Are you almost always unhappy with your hair?

11. Do you worry about your hair before any big occasion, like a wedding or an important business meeting?

If you answered yes to one or more questions, congratulations! You know who you are. You're a curly girl waiting to happen. Your hair is bristling with movement longing to break free, waves aching to curl, frizz begging for direction.

FUN, MOTIVATING, INFORMATIVE BOOK FOR CURLY GIRLS!

Before I bought the book, I read all the reviews. Without knowing what I was doing, I "shampooed" my hair in just conditioner the next morning. A co-worker told me how nice my hair looked! The next evening I bought the book and read through most of it. The following morning I followed Lorraine's instructions for cleaning, moisturizing, styling, and drying my hair. For the first time in my adult life, I left the house with air-dried hair, and I felt good! When I came back from shopping, my 21-year-old son flipped one of my curls and said, "I like your hair like that." My daughter told me, too, that she liked my hair. The real test came Monday morning when I went back to work--for the first time with completely air-dried hair. I got several compliments, but I didn't feel really comfortable about my hair. For me, putting in gel when my hair is wet doesn't work very well--it weighs it down. So the next day, I left the gel out, and my hair turned out great--got lots of compliments. Even my boss told me he liked my hair! Another plus--my flakiness seems to have lessened a great deal. Also, I would get a flaky buildup around my ears. That has also lessened tremendously. I live in the desert, but this weekend I'm going to the beach. I used to be afraid of humidity and the beach--now I'm looking forward to it! I recommend this book to all curly girls out there. It gives you the know-how and confidence you need to finally give up all the straightening tools and let your hair be free!

How did I survive without this book!

OMG. This book is the best thing since slice bread. I have spent my whole life being told I have ugly hair. I finally feel like there is hope for me and now for the first time in my 48 years, people are telling me how beautiful my hair is. Thank you Curly Girl!

It really is just a handbook, though a good one.

I must admit I was happy to find a book about curly hair that wasn¿t aimed at ethic or Hispanic nationalities, as there are not many to choose from on this topic to begin with. Having inherited my curls from my dad and growing up in a family of otherwise straight haired Caucasian women, I didn¿t always have the know-how that I wish I¿d had. A lot of the advice here is very good, but needs to be modified to suit individual needs. The part about air drying hair only is unrealistic, especially if it is long like mine, this would take forever. A diffuser works just fine and shouldn¿t hurt if you¿ve got the gist of the routine down. I¿d already been experimenting with not using shampoo on a regular basis and just rinsing with conditioner before I bought this book, so this just confirmed it for me and I¿m glad, because it is so much easier than going straight. I decided to try and stick with the routine long-term and am happy with what I see, although I received compliments on my hair before as well. Not sure how this method would work on someone with dandruff or oily hair though. The pictures of the curly models were wonderful. I appreciated that they looked like regular people and were realistic examples, which I think was the point 'when will people finally stop obsessing over models and airbrushed celebrities.' I enjoyed reading the `testimonials¿ and found that some of what was written mirrored my own thoughts and experiences. Having spent an extended amount of time abroad where the majority of the population isn¿t obsessed with swingy blond hair has helped me gain perspective as well as some much needed self-esteem in this department. I liked the overall upbeat feel of this book, as it is a fun, cheery confidence booster. The brief timeline was fun to read. I secretly hoped that Keri Russel would eventually become the epitome of a new curly haired trend in Hollywood and flat hair favouritism would banish, but was very disappointed that some genius stylist decided to straighten those locks for MI3 and the CG campaign. Didn¿t Felicity become famous for her big curly hair in the first place? However, breaking down and simplifying different types of curls into three categories only? I found this part to be a bit weak. I was also hoping to find some fun ideas on styles and updos to embellish and experiment with, and this part of the book proved to be a disappointment. For skeptical curlies who are afraid of not looking professional, it¿s all about the details and how you style and wear it. I¿ve seen people with straight hair who didn¿t necessarily look so great and straightened hair that was dry and sometimes poofy in an attempt to look `professional¿. Lastly, I think there should be a book like this for men, as male curls have only recently become trendy. Most of the guys I know with curly hair have resigned and ended up cutting it short.

    No-Poo IS hygenic!

I have been following the teachings of this book for over a year. The people who think not shampooing is unhygenic are wrong--my hair is clean, my scalp is in great shape (no flakes or redness), and my hair is healthier than it has ever been. The important thing is to remember that you do still need to take steps to clean your hair, including doing a conditioner-wash (as the book says, most conditioners contain the same chemicals that are in shampoos for cleaning your hair, but are much milder so they don't damage your delicate curls) or using other products to help remove product build-up and keep your hair and scalp healthy. The difference I saw when I started following this routine was immediate, and my hair finally has beautiful, soft, defined curls instead of being a dry and frizzy mess. And keep in mind--my hair is long, fine, and pretty kinky, so it's hard to make it happy!

Curly hair has never been my thing

I showed this book to my beautician and she disagreed with parts of it. She felt that it is unsanitary nt to use shampoo.Long and thick curly hair, like many of us have, easily gets tangled and needs a comb. Scrunching is not enough. Otherwise, my beautician felt that the book was 'okay.'

    Lovin' my Curls

Finally, suggestions and how-to advice on managing unmanageable hair. This book has become my bible. Great tips and pictures to follow. I even went to the author's salon, Devachan, in NYC and what a treat that was!

    Thank you

This book seemed completely unorthodox, but all the other books said the same things about curly hair, and they never worked. Lorraine's methods worked, even on my post-partum hair. I don't want my daughter to grow up hating her waves and curls like I used to, but thanks to this book, I know how to take care of her hair, and she likes to scrunch it up with me. This book is a must-have for anyone who has curly hair or who has curly-haired kids.

    Curly Girls unite!

I have curly hair and it took me years and years to finally love it! I am buying this book for a little girl I know who hates her curly hair. I don't want her to go through middle school feeling the way I did. I do shampoo my hair, but only twice a week. I get compliments on my hair all of the time now. I LOVE MY CURLS and I'd never torture them 'or deny them' by straightening.

I had to try it to believe it!

Okay, I have to admit, I was skeptical about no shampoo! But I thought, 'What have I got to lose? My hair can't get much worse, can it? And if it does, I will just start using shampoo again!' Well, The answer is, I haven't use shampoo in 3 weeks! My hair is cleaner (less greasy), more manageable and my curls more defined than ever. If you are reluctant to try it, just give it a chance. I have shared what I have learned from this book with every 'curly girl' I know. Never in my 36 yrs. have I ever met or read anything by anyone who knows curls like Loraine Massey! 5 stars!!!!

    Love My Curls Now!

This book is a wonderful 'how to' book for those with many types of curly hair. It provides many secrets that the hair care companies don't want us to know. Shocked by the No Shampoo angle? Don't worry. The author's not advocating dirty hair. There is a product that she calls a moisturizing cleanser. I was reluctant at first, but after two times of using it, I'm hooked for life! I do think that the book has some room for improvement. I don't think my hair really falls into any of the given three hair types. It is really a combination of two plus it is extra thick! Nonetheless, the tricks and products shared in the book work really well on my tresses.

This is an addendum to what I already wrote. My beutician and I feel that it is unsantary and un hygienic not to use shampoo. This leads to a dirty scalp and rashes on one's scalp. It also des not smell nice. Now that i use a very effective straight iron, myhair looks shiny and straight. I get many compliments. I feel good about myself.

FROM A STYLIST POINT OF VIEW...

I am a hair stylist, and mother of a curly girl. And i must say that this book is great. Ive met lorraine and she has the most beautiful curls ive ever seen. But i definetly recommend this book to all my curly hair clients. This book teaches you everything you need to know about handling your hair type, and also helps guide you in choosing the right product. A must have!

I have coarse, thick, curly, frizzy hair that drives me crazy. To not use shampoo or a brush on one's hair sounds gross to me. I did not agree with this book. I also do not mean to be rude, but, I have to be honest. I use a blow drier and a flat iron and my hair looks shiny, straight, smooth etc. I am so much happier these days about my hair. I could never follow this books' advice.

    I Feel Liberated

I am on my fourth day of starting a new life with my hair after 45 years of Phyllis Diller hair, love ya Phyllis.. I talked to a stranger that had the most beautiful curls and she was 7 days into no shampooing and no blow drying and she shared the 'secret of curly hair'. Thank goodness we connected that day. I have shared the 'secret' with at least 25 people in 3 days and gave 8 of my friends early Christmas presents so they will have gorgeous hair by Christmas. My hair dresser got it first and next week she will cut my curls correctly. I make everyone touch my hair and can't stop looking in the mirror. I almost don't believe it is me behind those curls instead of the frizz I used to have.

Flaunt your curls - don't straighten them!

I love what 'Curly Girls' promotes: to embrace your curly self, take care of those curls, and flaunt them. I agree with the author's recommendation to not use shampoo on my hair. As a matter of fact, before I found this book, I was already doing some of the things she recommends: I never use a brush on my hair 'way less frizzy that way' only comb it in the shower to remove any snarls and had already cut back on the number of times per week I was washing at all. I disagree with the last reviewer about it being gross not to use shampoo - as long as you're doing other things to keep your hear clean and healthy, it's fine. I think flat-ironing your hair is missing the point about having curly hair. This book may not be for those who still think straight hair is the bomb, but if you love your curls and want to capitalize on your great asset, you need this book!

    My savior seriously

Excellent excellent book, especially if your just learning to take care of your curly hair. My mom still wont accept it and insists on brushing my hair out, over and over again-_- I have very kinky hair, and most of it's fallen out due to the brushing. But I never knew how to make my curls appear before this. I ofcourse changed some things, I use shampoo, and i gently comb my hair in the shover, or when i put cocnut oil in my hair before i take a bath to mostureize it I comb it then. I still haven't learned how to make my curls last from one shower to the next cause I prefer not to showever everyday it makes my hair fall out and most curly girls I know don't. But to make my curls last to the next day I suppose I have to use gel, and seeing as how I'm 16 and my mom doesn't give me an allowence and won't buy me 'unnatrual products' I'll have to wait. If anyone has any tricks on keeping hair from getting flat and limp while sleeping etc. please tell me
