About the Author

Anna Curren has been writing inspired clinical textbooks for more than 40 years. A nurse and former Associate Professor at California's Long Beach City College, she first wrote this text when the one she was using bore no resemblance to her students' clinical needs. Her graduate degree in instructional design, along with many student and instructor reviews, helped her create what is now the most adopted text on the subject. Also a successful entrepreneur, Ms. Curren founded Wallcur, Inc., a company which produces instructional products, including Injecta-Pad, Practi-Amp, Practi-Insulin Training Pack, and other learning resources. Margaret Witt is a nurse and physical therapist with more than 26 years of experience, including in the operating room and as a flight nurse. A retired Major in the US Air Force, Dr. Witt spent many years instructing and evaluating flight nurses, as well as writing, reviewing, and enforcing nursing regulations. She is currently Head and Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Department at Spokane Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington. This dosage and calculation book is a complete learning package from basic math review to titration of IV medication. This is the eighth edition; the previous edition was published in 1995. The purpose is to provide the reader with the calculation skills needed to practice alone in the profession. This is a global objective that is certainly accomplished by the authors. This book is for allied health students but would be a fine reference for nursing and staff educators as well. I have always liked these books in the past, and the authors are well qualified. A basic review of math calculations using ratio, proportion, and formula methods is presented. There is some use of color and samples of drug labels. Self tests are offered at the end of each chapter. There are also calculations of the BSA provided, using a formula instead of just the West Nomogram. The formula method is more accurate than the Nomogram. In Section 5 the authors deal with medication administration systems but only discuss paper forms. In this day and age, computerized methods should also be discussed. There does not seem to be much difference between the seventh and eighth editions. It would be nice to have more information regarding computerized documentation of medication or even computer generated MARs.
