This second edition book of orthopedic surgery is intended to give the reader up-to-date information on disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The purpose is to serve as a quick reference book to the physician faced with orthopedic problems. This objective is achieved in most instances. The book is written for medical students, residents, emergency room physicians, family practitioners, internists, and orthopedists. The editor of the book is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UC Irvine, and a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He has carefully chosen his contributors, all of whom are qualified to write this review book. The book is organized by anatomic structures and divided into 13 chapters. Chapter titles include: Basic Science in Orthopedic Surgery, Musculoskeletal Trauma Surgery, Sports Medicine, Adult Reconstruction Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedic Tumors, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, and Rehabilitation. This second edition is an improvement over the first one with the addition of more graphs and tables. Also, the rehab chapter contains information about spinal cord patients' ambulatory capacity, and there is new material on the role of the external fixator in fracture management. There are more than adequate illustrations and photographs in the text. The references are limited and they are not necessarily all current. A review is included for those taking their examinations. The problem with writing a current or up-to-date text is that by the time the work is completed, it is only partially current. For instance, the current management of slipped capitol femoral epilepsies treatment is percutaneouscannulated screw fixation. I am sure this is practiced by all pediatric orthopedic surgeons now, but it is not even mentioned here. Also, even more current is the trend to return to the conservative management of congenital clubfoot using the snick Ponseti protocol. Also, the percutaneous fixation of intertrochanteric fractures of the hip with intramedullary rods or plates and screws is a recent recommendation. However, this text is still a most worthwhile contribution to our specialty. I highly recommend it to our orthopedic residents and general orthopedists, although it is a little too advanced for medical students.From The Critics
