Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Sams, M.D.(Washington University Medical Center)
Description: This is the third edition of a quick resource on a variety of topics in rheumatology.
Purpose: It is designed as a quick reference for rheumatologists and clinicians interested in rheumatology, but it also can be used by students and residents to learn more about the field. The book meets its objectives by providing pertinent clinical information for busy practitioners, covering an extensive number of topics and providing a starting point for understanding rheumatology.
Audience: It is intended for use by students all the way up to rheumatologists. It is certainly appropriate for students, residents, and primary care providers. For rheumatologists and rheumatology fellows, it is a quick reference, but it lacks the more detailed information necessary for a more in-depth understanding.
Features: The book excels in covering a vast number of topics of interest to rheumatologists, doing so by approaching problems by organ systems. For example, there is a chapter on rheumatological disease of the eye. Additionally, it strives to provide a broad differential diagnosis for a problem, so that readers have a starting point for which conditions to research further in attempting to diagnose a patient.
Assessment: This serves well as a quick reference for rheumatologists and for an aid to help non-rheumatologists understand more about the field. It provides up-to-date information in a rapidly changing field. While it does not provide as much information as a more exhaustive book would, it is certainly quicker for gaining an understanding of a particular problem in rheumatology.
