Description: The overall description of this book as an "introduction to the specialty" could not be better stated. The main orthopedic subspecialty areas are addressed. This edition is the sixth, the last having been published in 2014. There is appropriate and adequate updated information on spinal disorders, sports medicine, neoplasms, joint replacement and preservation, and growth factors.
Purpose: The purpose of this treatise, as stated by the authors, is "to fulfill a need for a ready source of up-to-date information on disorders and diseases treated by orthopedic surgeons and related clinicians." This is a worthy objective; there is a trend toward super specialization and a dearth of general orthopedic publications. The objectives are satisfactorily met.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written "for students, residents, emergency room physicians, family practitioners, and internists." The needs of the intended audience are met very well. The authors are very credible authorities in the fields in which they have contributed.
Features: This is an excellent handbook that covers the basic areas of orthopedic surgery, but in a reasonably in-depth fashion. There are 659 pages with small print. The diagrams and radiographic images are well chosen and very instructive. Joint preservation surgery, an often-neglected area in the U.S., is particularly well addressed.
Assessment: This is an essential addition to the available database for the intended audience. It should be available in the emergency department and the medical library. This update is very much justified.
