Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is a collection of one-page synopses of medical diagnoses. The preface suggests that a main feature of this book is the inclusion of a pearl, described as "succinct, witty, and often colloquial; it is stated with a certitude suggesting 100% accuracy." The previous was published in 2005.
Purpose: Used as a reference, these one-page summaries give readers a starting point, but the book assumes readers have a certain base of knowledge that the text may remind the reader of some aspects of the diagnosis.
Audience: It may be useful for those trained in medicine who wish a quick memory jogger of some aspects of a diagnosis when considering an initial approach to a problem.
Features: The book is organized generally by organ systems followed by specific diagnoses. The one-page summary gives the essentials of diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment, pearl and a reference. I was not overly impressed with the pearls, some of which appear to stretch the idea to fit.
Assessment: This may have a place in a medical reference library for those trained in medicine but needing a memory jogger when doing research on a topic.
