Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This 50th anniversary edition brings some nice upgrades to this comprehensive book on the majority of topics that primary care physicians encounter in their offices. It is published yearly to stay current with changes in treatment,
Purpose: The editors succinctly outline what is different and new in this edition, but the purpose remains to give all levels of medical care providers an easy-to-use desk reference of medicine. Maintaining this currency is a monumental task and the editors continue to accomplish this very well.
Audience: This is for everyone looking for medical information, from house officers, residents, and practicing physicians to patients and family members. There is very little unnecessary text and the book is quite easy to use with a modicum of medical knowledge.
Features: "The book is organized by organ systems and by diagnoses within systems. Each section, where appropriate, has general considerations, clinical findings, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. There are limited references where they support recent changes, and some helpful tables, but not in overwhelming numbers. This edition adds more high quality color photographs and a wider range of dermatologic pathologies. There is an online edition with five chapters not available in the print edition that is updated quarterly. "
Assessment: This book has the tremendous benefit of being updated yearly and thus has stood the test of time for recognizing what is helpful and what works. It is well worth the price and a great addition to a primary care practitioner's library.
